Brian Nesbitt-Clarke

My name is Brian Nesbitt-Clarke and I live in Holywood. I recently took early retirement and to fill the space an OU course in Creative Writing which I thoroughly recommend to everybody. I'd like to share some of the poetry that came from the course and some poetry that came from my heart.

Belfast: - Arrival (1973) by Brian Nesbitt-Clarke
Belfast didn't welcome me with flags
Or bunting. No brass bands to herald
My coming. Just rainy drizzle, off the ferry.
Orange street lights reflect in puddles
And some people. Belfast didn't see me
As I drove from place to place.
Belfast never knew I was there.
Driving, searching, weapon ready,
Stopping, looking, hearing, feeling.
Nothing changing but the date.
Hate prevailing, people leaving,
Leaving on ferries to elsewhere, anywhere.
City's deserted, they've all gone home.
There's no shopping here. No shops.
Sirens are blaring, am'blance's chasing.
A bomb's just gone off up the Falls."
Indifferent Policemen, used to the killing,
Drive by in their shiny new cars.
