John Harkness
John Harkness

I was born in Ballymena in 1966, and in 1969 my parents moved to Ballycastle, where I was brought up and educated. I then studied Architecture at University of Ulster and then at Humberside University, between 1985 and 1993. I am now living in Belfast and am an associate with an Architectural practice (David Ferguson & Associates) in Holywood. I am married to Jane form Rathfriland and we have a 3 month old son called Matthew. I used to be very athletic and into all types of sports, however I don't have time for sports now due to other 'duties' I am 'born again' and most of my poetry would be influenced by the Bible. I have also written some poems for weddings and other special events.

Gethsemane by John Harkness

Leaving the upper room Christ goes
To dark Gethsemane
And over, where brook Cedron flows
To dark Gethsemane

What scenes come up before our eyes
In dark Gethsemane
As on the ground the Saviour lies
In dark Gethsemane

Twas there the Saviour agonized
In dark Gethsemane
We hear the lonely Saviour’s cries
In dark Gethsemane

He knew His awful death was near
In dark Gethsemane
An angel, to strenghten, did appear
In dark Gethsemane

Upon His mind, His work to do
In dark Gethsemane
Forsaken by that chosen few
In dark Gethsemane

We see strong crying and His tears
In dark Gethsemane
‘Thy will be done’ the father hears
From dark Gethsemane

So on He went towards the cross
From dark Gethsemane
Yes, on He went to save the lost
From dark Gethsemane
