Warwick Dalzell

Warwick was born in Co Down and taught for a time in Northern Ireland. He sought his fortune in Africa, but returned home penniless. After another stint at the chalkface, he went to London. There he met Peter O'Loughlin who advised him to head for Australia, where he lived on and off for forty years. He is now a frequent pilgrim to the old country.

The Lough Shores by Warwick Dalzell

The Lough Shores.
Begin in an Iron Age village
Dug unexpectedly
From its burial place
By an impetuous hoe.
Walk through a quarry
Long abandoned.
Cross over drumlins
Down to the lough.
Where tides of time
Have leached the shore
Follow the coast
And count the islands
Three hundred sixty five
More or less.
Pass the Big Stone
Swing round Barr鈥檚 Bay.
Look over mud flats
And bird trodden ways.
If fortune favours
See the wooded islands
And rocky pladdies
Haunted by gulls,
Terns and waders.
Sit for a while
To view the Mournes,
Hazy in the warm sun.
Walk on.
The lough鈥檚 rim appears again
Near strangled
At Portaferry
But the rush of water
Saved it there.
Gaze over the Narrows
To Strangford Town.
Journey鈥檚 end
For you?
Or a new beginning.
