Land and Sea Sports
You could always ask a farmer, leave a deposit, etc, then if it works out ok no deposit next year.
just a newbie
hi i was reading the comments there.there is some complete ***s out there and i'll be learning this surfing this year and i dare one of yous to frow me a dirty look. i will personally drag u up the beach with ur ears and u'll be leaving the beach in a ambulance.. yous are sum crack thinking ye own the water... who gives you the rite to say who or when we can surf..hope to see you soon DUDE!!!!!
X-Sponger
JD, try the camp sites. There not too pricey & also a bit of added security for your stuff u get showers, toilets, cooking facilities and some were to hang out if it's raining. I think camping is not allowed at most beaches in Ireland. Allot of land leading to beaches have no fences and usally r private, I have come across occasions when the land owner is that annoyed they destroy your stuff or tie the loops in the tent door and break the tent down while ur a sleep. I even know a place were the land owner pays a guy to get rid of people of his land in the summer. Gardai don't usally mind as long as your quite not lighting fires and dont leave a mess.
navier-stokes
hey jd- depending on what county you travel to it varies wither or not it is legal to camp on the beach. i know that kerry and cork have out right banned it do to muppets leaving trash, tents and broken glass ruining the beaches and dunes for everyone else. many of the nw spots are fine to park and camp on as long as there are no signs saying other wise. try not to just hop fences as you are then technically trespassing and that is sure to bring the guards or a farmer down on you. good luck have fun.
2scoops
will there ever be any surf again... i can't stand this!!
jd
hey guys need a bit of advice, head down the west coast for a week or so this summer, gona hire a van and just sleep in the back of it or in a tent, does anyone know if its legal to camp on the beaches down south or how safe would it be, theirs 3 off use going so i think we could hold our own, but just incase the gardi end our trip unexpectedly thanx guys!
Dr.Dan
If county council's/surf clubs all over invested in Nat Young's surf etiquette signage on the entry to every surf break maybe people would understand the rules and everyone may get on with each other.Last entry for me.Enjoyed the comments,as for my mucker pingpong when you travel to those classic breaks in far off indo,kirra,j-bay or pipeline etc. stay out of the water it's only for locals! Try to be happy,go surfing.
pingpong
ring sting disagree its surfers like you should stay in the swimming pool and keep out of the deep becaues i surf strandhill yesterday and the vibe was good so ringsting stay in your paddleing pool in easter
ring sting
have to agree with the comments made by dr dan, never mind sting eye, its got to the stage that its ring sting the vibe was so bad in strandhill yesterday, they was no respect at all just drop in on anything from 2 guys cutting let and right...meeting in the middle and 5 guys going for the one wave...gonna be a massacare at easter.
Kayak Hater
Out yesterday at a popular break, good vibe in the water.Everyone seemed to be well stoked. There was even a kayaker out, Token. He's domesticated so he's ok!
Dr.Dan
Dropping in,snaking or basically not respecting a line up situation is potenially dangerous in the surf.In 16 years have seen the Irish water become more populated and knew this"stink eye" attitude would come just as it exists in my old home town of Sydney and many other surfing nations. How to deal with it is the age old question. My take on it is let them have the waves, find another beach,it might not be perfect but why let a a couple of cavemen ruin your day.Surfing is all about having fun not how big your head is or your brain for that matter.
Nizzer
Casey, I was up on Sunday and yea there was a bad vibe about in the water, seamed to be 2 groups of fellas givin the old stink eye to pees a few times, no need at all.
Ger
Wise words there from Casey. The amount of dropping in that now happens at this crowded surf spot is getting out of control. Relax, enjoy the waves and don't be a kook!
casey
whiterocks surfing last week there seems to be alot of bad vibes from fellow surf for waves some surfers should chill out and take there turn and show respect to fellow surfers and less porkchops
Enda Keen jetskier
I think it's a disgrace trying to ban our sport. Everyone who owns jet skis are responsible and have insurance which means they care for the safety of other beach users and themselves, it would also be very bad for trade in the areas of Donegal as we bring our family and friends.
Carl
I think the jetski ban is a total utmost disgrace. There should be zones put in place at all beaches for jet-skis the same as what has been done with great success in uk, example benone is now zoned. There is now jet skis being used as rescue craft because they are so manouverable and speed to get to people in trouble, and for a complete ban with so many people signing petitions against it not to be taken on board is disgraceful.
A RESPONSIBLE JETSKIER
The donegal tourist trade will be hit hard this year due to poor euro ,by banning jetski of the beaches wont help ,just give them a zone like in rossnowlagh.
Ian
Jetskiers dont have to be banned, just give them the same rights as the surfers ,jetskiers can get help fast to someone. The reason why people buy a jetski is they are easier put into the water than a boat, many users are responsible you dont buy a jetski ,you invest in one ,they provide fun and pleasure for people and their families. If the Donegal council ban the jetskis people will go elsewhere. With the euro rate being so poor they wont want people not going to donegal for a day trip ,it would be cheaper to go to Lough Erne for a day ,1400 submisions cant be wrong how many wanted jetskis banned !!!.
mac
Why cant they have a zone for jetskis, it worked in Rossnowlagh and is still used for jetskiing. If anyone ever gets in trouble or in the future the quickest way to get someone out of the water is a jetski. They even use jetskis at some beaches in the uk. The council have the choice. By banning the jetskis they will just send people somewhere else, by providing a zone they can help promote a tourist attraction. It would have not been possible for the surfers to catch the biggest wave in Ireland of Sligo coast if thy had not used a jetski!!!! Next they will be banning kite surfing, most jetskiers have insurance to use their, craft maybe the council may allow jetskis only if they have insurance. Most jetskiers are responsible people, it may seem dangerous to some people but it is actually a sport!!
David Dulacki
Re. the ban on PWC's. Don't start down that slippery slope. Removing one group of peoples choice of recreation at the expense of another, with just cause is one thing...without, another. Compromise
Donegal jetski user
I think the jetski ban is a total disgrace not everyone that uses them is irresponsible. There should be zones put in place at all beaches for jetski use so that skis and swimmers can be kept apart. Most jetski users also have licenses and insurance to use the ski as they are not cheap machines. Only irresponsible people should be banned as they are giving all users a bad name. Why dont we get cars banned because a few people are dangerous drivers?.
Kelly
Just wanted to let you all you guys know, I'll be sending some waves you way real soon!
Ger

any one else think its been a pretty (bad) october?
Gonna drop in and cut yer head off
Bloody sick of the bad attitude surfers have developed up here as past few years, everyone has all of a sudden turned into Kelly Slater wannabe posers. Just wish people'd chill out and cop on, surfing is for fun and enjoyment, that seems to have been lost a little. Put away the surfer mags, get out and have fun. DON'T BE A KOOK!
harry hall
hi guys, been charging the last few weeks at the north cost swell magnet, one bad wave lost the harry's, meanie tube riding cutting 360s i am a broken man...any re-hab for surfers?
slops
those signs are needed big time!!! having witnessed the chaos at a well known donegal break last saturday. 20 plus all going on the same wave, beginners flopping about in front of the peak. i didn't see one wave ridden unhindered. its only a matter of time till someone gets hurt badly. roll on the cold weather. that'll thin them out.
slops
a certain donegal beachbreak on saturday was a complete disgrace. 20 plus muppets paddling for the same wave. its only a matter of time till someone gets busted open up there.
Kayak Hater
I won't be a surprise if camping gets banned in the Northwest as well, same reason! You bring it to a beach, you should be able to take it home as well.
Surferireland
If going touring down south have some local respect - ask a farmers permission before tramping through and they usually will allow you to camp on their land for free.
kayak hater
Great to see a wave again!
youngsurfer
how bad is it? i cant remember the last wave i had:L?Im off school and theres no waves! Tho for when its flat you should get a longboard skateboard! there amazing you and carve and slide all ani where like surfing on land!!!
mr chimp
just wondering if any of you fellow chargers have ever suffered chimp syndrome.....took a few whipe outs last weekend in the good swell feel like i have a little chimp on my shoulder hindering my ability to cut it up when it counts...really need some sound advice please
Kayak Hater
Didn't Nat Young get the crap beat out of, him for being an a**hole at his local break, a few years back?
casey
surfed strandhill on easter it was pumping so stoked fourteen foot vibe plus ten forty surfers cutting right three free stylers cutting left on real the strandhill crew on fire and very friendly michael jako jackson must of been out a lot of screaming and singing but it pumped the mas to surf harder the vibe onreal sum surfed to ten in the night hardcore
pingpong
drdan basically your full of seaweed or your asun god but as thee say the board is in the barrel were all good surfers belong the property belongs to natives and the surfers who brave them selve in the winter or the hazzards of extremes of what the sea offers the vibe lives on stoked
Newbie
I personally think instead of getting your grey hairs ina twist, teach the new guys, ie guys like myself some sorta rules, I've had like 5 lessons now at standup surfing, and not in one of those did they mention about dropin rule, i checked it online. Anyhows, there seems to be a hell of alota people taking up this sport at the moment, if ye see a guy who looks to be new and "dropping in" all the time then it really aint hard to paddle over and have a friendly chat with him/her about basic unwritten rules, if anything they'll be like me and be glad of every bit of info they cn get.For the experienced guys doing it, cnt ye just give em a slap or summit?
mark
guys ,,, i hit delete function there instead of publish on a few comments. humble apologies. im a muppett. keep em comin ...
pappa joe
yea ring sting, ur talking throught ur ####, was surfing at strand over easter...it was a great vibe 1 non local dude on an al maverick was cutting it up big time, althought he did take wipe out of the year!
JD

NoseFallOffer
Pingpong your ould nuts! Theres a small bunch of guys at Strandhill who make the Bundoran locals look friendly.
Dr.Dan
Pingpong, last time I surfed Strandhill I didn't notice your sign "Property of pingpong, keep off". Maybe it washed away with the tide or is it in the back of your car with your board I wonder?
Nizzer
haha classic, Dan your completely correct, its all about havin fun chillin out etc, I think a few people have a bit of a big head on em, iv not been surfing long (just over a year) and still learning however i know the rules and stick to em, just seams a few ones forget that they too had to learn at some point.Hopefully get up the port this weekend or next, gona miss winter when its empty :(

Isabelle
I like waves! Do you like waves? Do you have a girlfriend? Your hot.
Lady Jetskier
I think that Donegal County Council should treat everyone fairly. They seem to have different rules for different people. It's discrimination. Most jetskiers are responsible people. I myself go skiing with my children. The safest and quickest way to resolve this issue is to give jet skis zoned areas. They obviously haven't thought about how this is going to affect marine tourism. There's too many criers in Donegal. Tourism is about inviting people into your area, not chasing them away. What happened to our submissions? Have the councillors even looked at them or are they blinded by the elections? There's never been any fatalities in Donegal caused by jet skis so why are they being treated so unfairly. I say get rid of the fishermen, they're killing the fish, not us!!

navier-stokes
have surfed a few different quads and i really like them compared to thrusters. find that they tend to naturally find the speed of the wave and are really skatey in feel. thinking of selling one of mine if interested.

Has anyone used a quad fin? Am thinking of getting one some time soon, any thoughts?

Heading to N Donegal next week (Derry Airport permitting). Looking for some advice on the best (and safest) beaches in inishowen for a novice 42 year old and his family, keen on getting back into the water. Loved it last year, any other beaches worth visiting? Done a bit of surfing but still a wannabee!

i would say jim that your friend would need to be really careful! a bad hit on the board may be dangerous....better making sure with her doc.

A surfing friend of mine has just heard she is pregnant. Any body got any advice about if continuing to surf is a good and safe idea? Any women out there wanna comment?

Jim D
Lokking good for midweek stoke! Happy days. Heading to the north coast on Thursday evening after work. Any one getting on it?

Best bet in the wave free times is to get a big long skateboard, find a car park and pretend you're in the water. Check out the Lush boards- sweet. Nearest thing to surfing on dry land.

Scored West Donegal beach break on Monday night, Perfect Longboard Wave, waist to chest high and peelin'!!!!Only me and my mate out!! Where were you all??

Sorry for the rant but any problems I have, including lack of surf, just dont seem important enough now. The images from China and Burma bring home how fortunate we are. At least China seems to value their people more.
Kayak Hater
We are lucky, we are not under rubble from an earthquake. Or being ignoroed by a military junta who only interest is staying in power and their people can die of stavation/thirst because they wont allow aid workers into their country.

Its nice to see/hear about surfers using equipment that does'nt comform to the pack! To me older designs and retro shapes are of more interest than the stardard thrusters which abound. Just my opinion, I'm sure many would disagree.

its made buy tiki, called a wave eater II, its about 20ty yrs old, bought it of a guy in the paper i realy didnt think he new what he was selling, its got a realy nice like parrots head graphic in the center,it has a round tail and slighty bulker compared to 2days short boards, its a soft foam core with a hard fiber glass shell, and a wooden stringer down the middle, looks a bit out of place in a line up, but its my pride, and joy!p.s are kayaks now fitted with time traveling machines, i got droped in on lst weekend and he came from knowhere lol

sound stuff there Kayak. Id say too, dont forget points. Most surfers would agree that the natural progession is beachies to points to reefs. We dont have many points here though, compared to the vast number of beachies and reefs, but there are a few. If you do mess up on a point break, you are usually close to an escape channel outside. plus if you do go for reefage, take time to suss the extreme reefs from the more do-able ones. Also they break with different force and shape at different tides.
Hot Ice
Good advice on reefs. Also suggest stay on the shoulder and don鈥檛 go too deep.Remember reefs can suck dry.

North West Surf Club meeting and Video night at Arena 7, Letterkenny on 6th March @ 7PM.Hope to see you there.
Kayak Hater
At your beachbreak, when you can take off and surf down a open wall with confidence and carry out a few maneuvers. Being totally confident to be in a crowded take off area. Not abandon your board at the first sign of a cleanup set.Can completely uphold surf etiquette, critical on a reef setup. If you tick all the above go out on a small, uncrowded day at a break with someone who experienced and familiar with that particular location.
Leo
When do you know that you are good enough to start trying out reef breaks?
Ger
A stoke filled 2008 to all. May the surf be with you!

just a quick word ... weekend charts looking good. Saturday a bit hit and miss, but sunday & Monday looking really good. Dropping tides, increasing swell, and offshore wind. Potential bliss from Bundo to Ballycastle. Get on it. HNYear to all. m

jd, before anyone could truly give advice on what size of additional board to go for. They would have to know your standard, what size and quality waves you normally surf. Also how do you want it to compliment your current board, do you want it as a bigger wave board or something that works in small or onshore/mushy waves. Local shaper Rosy Surfboards, very popular. Talk to Rosy, can be contacted through his site.
Jim D
Happy Christmas to all on the site here. Here's to plenty of stoke in 2008. Cheers to Mark and Louie.
sandy oliver
Hey Mark, Its great checking out your site. Love seeing your waves over there. Its summer here, all the wetties are stowed, the boardies out, the girlies are all tanned and the cossies are smaller than ever. Bull says the waves in Tonga were a no show. Bugger ! You have a Christmas and New Year mate. Love Sandy

Bad news from Tatoween! Darth Vader,Lukes Dad, Has given orders that the entire Imperial Battle Fleet are to be equipped with the new Dagger Inflared and Redline Legend Kayaks. If only Sammual L was here to save us! May the Force be with us.

This is cool. Are we like Star Wars geeks as well as surf geeks. Two for the price of one. Sweet coz there's nothing I like better than putting on the Return of the Jedi, turning the lights down, opening a botttle of beer and puting my hair in two buns and putting on the wife's... oh, I might have said too much!!

Luke, tell me about him! Not surprised his Dad nearly got him to join the Dark Side,What would you expect from a guy who fancies his sister!
Obi Wan
Laid, Don't get me wrong. I don't mean the run away and hide type of retreating. More of a strategic withdrawal of combatants to regroup and plan. Luke would be a good addition to the struggle against the Dark side if only he wasn't such a wimp!
Laird
Obi Wan, fear is the path to the dark side (where all the kayakers live). Luke Boardwalker will be joining us, the Hui will prevail!
Hot Ice
Simon welcome to the mad house. There have been some epic swells recently. Portrush has two of Ireland鈥檚 top bodyboarders, both away for the winter, and is a good place to start. Call into Troggs and Woodie鈥檚 in Portrush for the low down on the best beaches. I am pointing you to Portrush because I am trying to keep Donegal quiet. That鈥檚 like pushing water up a wave with a grape. Everybody and their dog are determined to spill the beans on Donegal. There is even a blog now for heaven鈥檚 sake. Mark has good links on this site, check them out. Oh and watch out for deranged surfers!
Obi Wan
Laid, you know I'm always up first for a scrap with the evil Empire and the Trade Federation. But thats some size of Death Star to be taken on! Maybe we should retreat to the beachbreaks of Tatoween and lay low!
Ger
Simon, give me a shout and I can give you some pointers on where to catch some nice booger barrels

Obi Wan, prepare your cruiser, the final battle is upon us. Kelly, Andy, Damian, DJ and Jim D will be in the line up. The force will be with us brah!

In the here and now, in a Galaxy right here!Kayak Wars! Darth Jim D has been saved from the Dark side by Jedi Knight Slater. The evil that is Kayaking is once again banished to far corners of the river bank. Hopefully to no longer contaminate the surf breaks of the universe.
Obi Wan
Laid, is that new cruiser with the Proton Hyper Drive propulsion?
Jim D
Kelly Slater, wow! Kelly Slater talked to me!! Right. That's it. I was thinking of going over to the dark side of the Kayaker (due largely to the ranting of the so-called kayak hater) but now that the lord of all surf- Slater himself- has sopken it's away with the paddle, and back to the board. Continuity Kayaking no more. Wouldn't it be great if it was like this all the time? Thank you Kelly Slater... Thank you.
Laird
Yeehaa!!! I've just re-done me crimbo list and Santa is droppin me off a nu 9ft cruiser

What is Santa bringing you for Christmas?

Dust the bodyboards down because guys that the only thing that will be catching waves this weekend if swells predicted are correct. All local beaches will be maxed out if that size is correct. The swilly might be a good option and I am not joking. You willing to try the swilly Mark goog for longboards and Goat-boats.

Rejoice & be happy all those on planet surf. Kelly (living legend and Jedi Master) has defeated the evil emperor, burned his kayak and restored balance to the north shore.Just in time before the next swell hits!!!

Kayak Hater, in a funny old way you might have contributed to the downfall of surfing in favour of the (obviously) more popular sport of kings- kayaking. You shouldn't have brought it up bro!! Where's that paddle?

I've had a problem with a Take Off board recently. I had it for about a year and noticed a few months ago that it was raising up in the middle of the board about 1 1/2 feet from the end. Afetr a few weeks it split. I took it back to the shop and they (eventually) got it looked at by a Take Off rep who accepted it had a fault. They have replaced it with another Take Off. Has anyone had these kinds of problems with those boards? I wonder if this one will go the same way?

Hot Ice,thats some size of a field 1000000v per metre, thank God for Google!I don't need a boat to drop in, just a surfboard! Not interested myself but as regards surf contests, they improve standards. If you have a keen competitor/s at your break you can only learn. Also you have to move your game up a gear to catch waves off them!

Hot Ice to answer your question about bodyboarders changing from bodyboard to surf boards -1. Much warmer surfing a surfboard or longboard because you are higher up in the water. I always got cramps in the legs or Kidney infections due to the cold water. Granted suits were not that good 12 years ago2. waves in Ireland are not that good for bodyboarding. I used to go out surfing with Kayak Hateronly I found it becoming a drought for good waves for the bodyboard you had to head west for good waves.3. The bodyboard has far more advantages over the surf board. More moves on bodyboard to try. you can duck dive easier. You can go deeper than a surf board. I have caught my biggest wave on a bodyboard due to no other surfer would go out in it. Best of all you can surf certain breaks on the west coast and no one else will be on them except spongers and they aint that many in Ireland.Ever surfer should try it dont knock until you try it.

BA's surfboard ban has stirred up a hornets nest (any publicity is good publicity). The British Surfing Association have an online petition that people can sign www.britsurf.co.uk. Their advice is:- (1) sign the petition, (2) If you have a Facebook account join the Facebook ' British Airways Surfboard Ban' group, (3) register a complaint online with BA directly (4) encourage other surfers to follow these steps. The Irish Surfing association have also encouraged its members to support the British Surfing Association petition to stop the BA surfboard ban.

Hot ice, if as you suggest there was no collaboration between the ISA & BPSA for the Circle One Pro, then that is regrettable. The contest was a weekend of high quality surfing in excellent waves and can only enrich the local area and local surfing. However all bodies need to work together for this type of event and its impact to have a long term positive effects. Also the new watersports centre at the East Bay, which was open for the event, should be accessibile at all times to all water users.
Hot Ice
Would surfing in Ireland been enriched if the ISA and the BPSA worked together at the recent Portrush competition?
Hot Ice
kayak Hater, nice one. Your humour always gives me a laugh. Hot Ice is a phenomenon where ice can form at room temperature if water is placed in an electric field. It reflects my personally, a path less travelled. Your lucky I didn't use "Cold Fusion" as my signature, imagine explaining that. Have you thought of a Laird Hamilton SUP board? At over 12 feet long you would be king of the drop ins.
Hot Ice
No Surfing and No Motorised Craft are two examples of water safety signs for use by local authorities. They have been drawn up to international standards by Irish Water Safety who are the statutory body established to promote water safety in Ireland. They take a holistic view to water safety, including signs and have provided with the support of the local authorities numerous ringbuoys at various breaks in North Donegal. Some credit for this excellent water safety work is due. Before people go charging off on a crusade for signs at the big breaks in North Donegal I suggest they make contact with them at www.iws.ie. The Donegal water safety area committee contact including his email and phone number is also shown on their site.
mark
many of you already might have heard that BA have announced a check in ban on surf boards. Disappointing i have to say, especially since golf clubs are still 'ok' by them. How do you approach this as surfers? Ive never once been charged on long haul form OZ or the US. Do surfers use their buying power, lobby etc on this?
mark
I think were saying much of the same thing guys ... every year lives get lost here, adn its often in the simplest, saddest of circumstances - and usually involves a rip. Im standing my ground on the signs thing for N Donegal tho. I think if you find a spot, and if it has a history of being surfed, and used by family groups, popular etc, then it should have a sign which tells you of the various dangers. Port has em, other places ahve em - they shud be all over. Good vibes JD, will keep the safety emphasis vibe for sure ... ps... anyone else stoked as a good thing today? A wee squad of us got the north coast clean peeling on Thu and Fri before the wind kicked in. Pro Tour at Port - superb... what a perfect weekend of general shred... pps. Surfism event went off well too on Thu. Cheers to all.

Hot Ice: that's where I agree with you about personal responsibility for heading any advice. Mark, that's one message that the batch can get out there to new surfers: talk to people on the breaks or beaches and take the advice. And Hot Ice and Kayak Lover(!) are right about learning to walk before we can run (I speak as a fast walker, not as a runner myself!). That said, appropriate signage is one way to help people to get enough knowledge about the ocean and how it works. What do youse think?
Hot Ice
I am deeply saddened by the incident in Portugal. I reprint here part of an article that appeared in yesterdays Irish Independent. 鈥淒aniel Salvaterra (33) who runs a surf school on Tonel beach and works part-time as a lifeguard, said that he had warned the British children to leave the sea because of the strong currents 15 minutes before they got into trouble.鈥 Copyright The Times, London, and reprinted in the Irish Independent on wednesday 24th October 2007.

Anyone know what time the CirlcOne Comp starts at on Saturday? Also is it only one day or will Sunday be goer as well?Ta
Jim D
Why no signs at big breaks? I agree with no naming and I don't think we should do it here, but safety goes beyond just our own responsibility. One of the attractive things about surfing here is that there is a sense of community, even this e-community that Mark and Louise have got going here. It's nice to be part of that. Surely we can help welcome people safely into that community and still have respect for the ocean and not name spots. The personal responsibility is to take the advice we get (signs or verbal advice from more experiences surfers). I guess we also have to be sensitive around this topic today when we hear about the people in Portugal. I surfed that spot in August (and my kids were bodyboarding there as well) Sad stuff.
Hot Ice
Mark we are all responsible for our own safety. Start with a respect for the ocean. My favourite big break has a large clear sign 鈥淒angerous Currents鈥. People completely ignore it. Worse mums and dads (who should be mature and sensible) with young boogie boarders ignore it. Again these same people ignore the safe part of the beach patrolled by lifeguards. Please no signs at big breaks.
mark
fersure .... but guys are still gonna get in there, and in many cases, not even know that there is a rip. Its as much for swimmers, baby boogers etc - when nowhere else is working, people will end up at the big spots - and they still rip when theyre small. Ive spoken to people a dozen times at the beach, and in most cases, they havent a clue about the water/rips. Port etc have loads of signs telling you exactly wheret he rips are. I tink there should be more of the same signage - especially in N donegal, where, if you do get into diffs, theres a chance youre not even going to be seen. m
Hot Ice
Mark beginners should not go out at big breaks, walk before you run. I have sat on the beach occasionally and said it was too big for me. No shame in that, leave your ego at home. Learn to read the conditions, develop good technique, build your fitness and buying good gear will go a long way to improve safety in surf. This can be done without naming big breaks and giving details of their rips. Respect the ocean and know your limit. Enjoy the journey.
Kayak Hater
What do you mean by "big spots". If you mean larger wave breaks, should a beginner be there in the first place. Why not do what everyone else has, walk before they can run.
mark
Guys .... break info and naming. New surfer mails and says basically 'how do i learnabout the rips at the big spots as i find them?' He and the mates have all been ripped at the big spots. Theres still a broad no-naming mentality here - and we're keeping it that way on this platform... but theres no real way of finding out safety info, except if youre lucky nuff as a newbie to run into a surfer who will tell you the crack. The point is, the no naming thing is preventing detailed local rip knowledge from being shared. Personally i think we need rip/tidal pattern signs, especially in N Donegal where the most dangerous breaks have no facilities, signs etc... nada ... Can we achieve rip info and specific break patterns with doing guys heads in over naming ...?

Hot Ice
Hi Kayak hater, Thanks for your views on bodyboarders. I think like your friend people tend to move from bodyboarding to stand up and not the reverse
Hot Ice
mt as you improve you will discover that there are fewer and fewer breaks that get your heart pumping. Its these breaks that you do not want to tell the world about. They may be a beach break with one small sweet spot or more probably a reef break . These spots can only hold a few experienced surfers. They may only work a few times a year. There may be limited or no road access and depend on the good will of the local land owner to access them. You spend years getting to know them and when and how to get the best out of them. Bang their on a forum, the crowd don,t respect the land owner, local surfers or the conditions They camp, leave rubbish, block access, can't cope, bail out, drop in etc. Of course in some parts of the world reef breaks are privately owned like cloudbreak and restaurants. Enjoy the journey!
slops
by the way mt the spot naming thing only really concerns the less well known or secret spots as we like to call them. guys find these places and get uppity about others finding out word spreading and crowds coming which all goes back to the etiquette/crowd thing. give it time and you'll be moaning like the rest of us lol enjoy!
slops
hebloodyhe you ain't been around long if you think slops is a fake name! i've been a constant face in the line up in inishowen for a long time. yes i'm not fussed on comps but i ain't got a problem if i know where they are then i can avoid them and i don't have to worry. going mobile with the last one did concern me slightly in case they ended up where i was (some where with a tight take off zone which wouldn't really work with a contest and free surfers in the water at the same time) only because i really don't like being run over by surfboards. if everyone plays by the rules and yes there are rules things would be so much easier. travelling in packs and dropping in are equally as bad as each other. no surfer in their right mind likes that stuff. when i go for a surf its with my dog and one or two others i don't paddle out at already crowded breaks and i never knowingly drop in on anyone. if i do i apologize.i'm friendly in the water and don't give or take aggro as most people who know me will tell you. if someone needs advice i give it. its not hard ladies you get what you give. your point about the peak is mute cos you can't prove there wasn't issues raised in fact i'd find it very hard to believe that people didn't complain. the problem with comps and clubs is that not every surfer is in them and having contests and free surfers in the water is going to cause problems, admitidly not at every break, if there is one peak and good surf. another point is i'm pretty sure most surf clubs do some sort of consulting with local non members. when i asked about this i was told "we are the locals" by a guy who is a high ranking member of the club. hardly a nice attitude. i know many of the guys i've seen about for years ain't members but i'm sure they all have some sort of 'local status'. lastly i think calling yourself hebloodyhe and going on about fake names is pretty stupid i.ve nothing to hide thats why i'm signed in as i'm known. end of sermon. slops aka gareth william lamrock. thank you and goodnight

... important issues, important questions, so lets keepercool. ps. everyone knows Slaps aka the Eglinton Ranger ...
mt
hey there...i'm new to surfing and i'm enjoying it. what i can't get my head around tho is this obsession with naming beaches. what are you all getting so uptight about? a beach is a beach. a public space. no one owns it. i think you are all getting a bit anal.
slops
give over children do what i did go to where the contest isn't and surf there. simple. ho has got a point about the etiquette thing tho i know a few surf club members who've complained about crowds in the past and it wasn't so long ago we had that mad day at spot (sic) with 40 odds in the water. everyone had the right to be there but it did ruin a good surf. the pollution from that stream is hyped a bit to. yes a lot of crap was talked last year, dogs getting sick etc and yes it kept the crowds down a bit (hardly empty) but i'd say if you'd tested that water 10 years ago you'd got the same results. whats more worrying is the large man eating octopus that lives there. i hear his family are staying the winter. that'll thin em out eh ho!
hebloodyhe
hobloodyho, i have watched a contest at the peak and there wasn't as much crap talked about it as been talked about the NWSC event. your point is mute. Why didn't rasie your concerns before the event? There is an open meeting held before these events for people to come and raise issues, you should use it. I think you complainers are afraid to voice your opinions directly to the surf club, you have to do it on a forum hiding behind fake names like "slops"!
kayak hater
Hot Ice, Bodyboarders and where they stand in the scheme of things? Or should I say lay!If I had to list my all time favorite surfers, I have to say that Mike Stewart would be close to the top. That guy has been to places on waves that we standups can only wonder at. So in answer to your question they don't brother me at all. When done on the right wave and with skill it is fun to watch. My mate Tow was a very good bodyboarder, el rolloes, spins and such but now he mostly does stand up......?Just so you know that I have a liberial side to me, I even have a Kayak Heratic as a friend. Surf with him many a day. His name is Token!
hobloodyho
yeah i think the reason no one was there was cos there was no surf there. and if you think bringing 40 people to a break is good go do it at the peak and see how well your recieved.
hobloodyho
sorry guys but the only way you'd get sick is to drink the water out of the stream itself! to think that such a tiny stream could pollute that beach is insane the hype last summer was unreal i for one never got sick and a good few others as well escaped with their lives lol. my ma and sister had the squirts at the same time tho and they've never been down there maybe its got into the drinking water! head to certain spots on the north coast or bundo if you wanna see real pollution guys. that stream is no more dangerous than some guy peeing in his wetsuit beside you and unless an oil tanker managed to make it up said stream and run aground on a pebble i can't see the oil coming from there either. oh and it ain't my local break by the way just somewhere that i put the hours in for many years when there was actually a wave there
hebloodyhe
showing up at a break in numbers for a contest is not bad etiquette. How else are you meant to run a comp if you have no competitors? The contest was run in 4 man heats, so only 4 surfers from the comtest at a peak at any one time, the organisers did not take over the break, anyone could surf anywhere on the day, no worries. Was at the same place on the weekend and there was hardly anyone about at all. You complainers are away surfing your "secret spots", very badly on your own anyway, so give over.
mark
ps. new "Yoga For surfers" kicking off in derry at the end of the month. will have full detail in this weeks batch.m

re: pollution, meslef, Steeze and Shim found this beach totally covered in minging white stuff and black oil at the weekend, and not a million miles from said polluted river. This stuff was rank, and the beach as all black and appeared lifeless. will put up the pics in the next gallery.m
hobloodyho
showing up at a break in large numbers is bad etiquette as i have pointed out TWICE! how do you feel if your in surfing and a load of guys show up? i've yet to hear one person saying "brilliant here comes a crowd" the guided tour remark was made in relation to the contest being moved from its original location. ironically away from the surf as it turns out.
Ed
Pollution in question did and does exist! Ring the labs in Letterkenny and find out for yourself! While I appreciate your concern on the whole "problems of the NWSC" thing hobloodyho, you seem very badly informed about you're "local" break!Of course the streams always been there. It's what is polluting the stream, then sea is the problem.I appreciate a difference of opinion, but you have to have your facts right first.
Hot Ice
Hi Kayak Hater, what's your view on bodyboarders?
kayak hater
I rant and rave about kayakers because when they have turned up they don,t particular care about any etiquette. No matter if its one of their own or anyone else who points it out. They have landed on a number of people already. The reference to the secret/semisecret breaks was in answer to your "guided tour" remarks. As regards the surf club, I turned up at the event, with no intention of surfing in the competition and asked where would I be allowed to surf. Not wanting to be in the way of the comp.Told by the organizers, surf where ever I wanted and don't worry about it.Which I did.Had a great time and met alot of nice people who fed and watered me! The beach clean up won alot of praise from the local residents, another plus.If any local surfers are not happy with the direction of the club they should get involved and voice their opinions.
hobloodyho
the mob handed comment was in regards to etiquette. its well known that its not on showing up at breaks with instant crowds its as bad as dropping in. then again your insured so you can run over people at will! ps that pollution scare was rubbish the stream in question didn't just appear its been there years and got covered in sand until a couple of years ago. i happen to know a certain couple of guys who hyped the whole sick thing and scored uncrowded waves for a couple of months! lol you know who you are. probably still got the danger keep out tape in the car
stevie
To be honest I can't see the problem with a club. Apart from the contests they are only doing what Mark is doing with this site and the surfism events. Also the NWSC have also contacted the donegal co.co regarding he pollution at a popular spot in inishowen and will be getting the water tested . Important issues that as individuals we'd probably get no staisfaction from the council! so there are benefits !!
cm
I think calling it mob handed is a bit over the top hobloodyho, and they certainly didn't take over as the better peaks were down the beach at T-bay. I'm lead to believe that the club has over 45 members which is nearly as many as some long established clubs in Ireland , which just shows it is bringing surfers together. But hey it's not everyones thing and that's cool after all surfing is an individual sport. The main reason for joining a club is not only the social aspect and the competitions but also the insurance cover you get will come in handy if you collide with anyone in these ever more busy waters.
slops
have to agree. can't see what good all this surf club nonsense will do. just surf for gods sake its not football. already we're seeing tensions after 2 events so if its meant to bring the surf community together then thats failed. hands up who likes surfing in crowds, honestly?
hobloodlyho
where did i mention secret spots? i've surfed in inishowen for the past 10 years and t-bay doesn't get crowded plus your ranting on about kayakers and etiquette is a laugh showing up at break mob handed and taking over is bad etiquette. and anyone who thinks its cool needs to get a grip. follow the leader sheep.
hobloodyho
never suggested it was at a secret spot. the thing is its bad to show up at any break with a mob and take over to show up with a contest is a bit much. and by the way i'm surfing up there 10 years and where the comp was moved to never gets crowded. thank god the waves were crap there. oh and thanks for staying away from another not so secret spot it was chest high offshore and only 2 out. lovely
CM
Great event run by NWSC!! Great surfing especially in the final. I don't know of any club that does beach clean ups at every event. well done guys.
stevie
I hardly think the surf club running a comp at the most popular break in Inishowen is a guided tour when 90% of the people in it were inishowen locals.
Kayak Hater
Have attended the N.W.S.C meetings and at no time did anyone susgest events at any secret/semisecret spots. If you thought (these spots - sic) were secrets, you can't be surfing for very long. (These spots - sic), popular with the crew from Letterkenny and (sic)for the Derry surfers.

Has anyone noticed how surf's being used in ridiculous adverts? "Donegal Bay Surf Club" for Debenhams for example? I ain't seen dudes like that in Donegal! Then there was a recent BTNI ad showing a NI girl who supposedly jacked her business life in to set up a shaping company called Little Pink Surf Boards. It was screened about 3 months or so ago. I've never heard of her or her board company in the North anywhere - but maybe I'm wrong?

yip, just back. stoked with new epoxy fish. interesting that some of you are stressed by 'yaks. Just sounds like bad etiquette. I think its lucka the draw. Locally, the yakkers are some cool cats. If someone seems to unaware of dropin rules etc, just have a civil word on the beach??

Sweet site, Louie. Going out on Sunday with Louise, Marty and Olinda up the north coast. Pretty quiet summer for the most part. Bring on the September swells!!

Saw a kayaker doing 360s on the waves at portrush's east strand. Looked class until he was coming down a wave backwards heading straight for me. I duck out of his way and he gives me a dirty look. Then I catch my wave, stand up (i'm thrilled cus this has only started to happen for me lately), then i look up and see my old friend paddling straight for me. I jump off to avoid a collision. He gives me a dirty look. Total disregard for other wave users and not an ounce of politeness. Something needs to be done... but what? To be fair i did see one kayaker trying to keep his mates away from everyone else - give that man a medal.

With so much rain this Summer, the rivers must be in full flood. Why then do they turn up at the surf breaks and drop in on every one?

Just got new surf board from Rory at Liquid Surf in Derry. Great guy, very helpful. Tried it out at Tullagh Bay, Brill. stuff. Can't wait to get in the water again. Great site. At 40 got surfboard instead of motorbike, and haven't looked back.

Inviting everyone to the east coast of America to check out the waves. This summer the break has been running up to 6 ft on stormy days. The coast of Maine, and N.H. has been specialy good. Very rocky conditions. I imagine your'e used to that over there.
