Chinese New
Year officially falls on Tuesday January 24th this year, and is
calculated by the lunar calendar, so it changes every year.
Chinese families
try to get together for a family feast on New Year's Eve, called
chuxi, just as most British families do for Christmas.
But the festival,
also called Spring Festival, lasts for 15 days so there is plenty
of chance to celebrate if you don't manage a party on New Year's
Eve itself.
In Nottinghamshire,
there are several events to consider.

It starts at
7pm at the Commodore Centre in Nottingham on Tuesday, January 30th.
Entry is free, but there's a charge of £25 per person for
the banquet, with proceeds to the educational and cultural work
of the association.
You can expect
a display of kungfu, a lion dance, traditional and modern songs
and traditional sweets made by the Chinese Women's Association.

invites you to a Chinese celebration. |
A celebration
party for the Year of the Prosperity Snake will be held on Saturday,
3rd February 2001 at International Community Centre, Mansfield Road,
Nottingham.
Admission is
free and the activities will run from 1pm until 4pm in a big hall
at the ICC. There'll be a Lion Dance and demonstrations of erhu
(Chinese fiddle), and arts and crafts. Lunch will be provided. For

| Enjoy cultural
events at your library. |
Hucknall Library
on South Street will hold a series of Chinese arts and crafts shows
on Saturday February 3rd from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
It will include
two Taichi (shadow boxing) shows, story-telling for children and
Chinese brush painting. Refreshments will be served and there's
no admission charge.
University
of Nottingham Chinese Association
There's a Chinese
New Year banquet at the West Concourse in the Portland Building
at the University of Nottingham sponsored by the Chinese Association
on Monday January 29th at 7pm.

for non-members.
A Chinese New
Year Fair is being held on Tuesday, January 30th between 12pm and
4pm at the East Concourse of the Portland Building on campus. You
can buy some Chinese snacks during the fair, which is also run by
the association.

has a well-known Chinese Olympic athlete on the University of Nottingham
