Fact File : The Deputy Headteacher who suddenly found himself
in Parliament. Vernon Coaker taught at Bigwood School in Nottingham
while serving as both a Parish and Borough councillor. His life changed
dramatically in 1997 when he defeated the Conservative Junior Minister
Andrew Mitchell to become MP for Gedling. One of his main interests
within the Commons is education (although he still finds time to support
Tottenham Hotspur)

Fact File : Alan Simpson was brought up in Bootle but studied
economics in Nottingham. He worked for the Racial Equality Council
for thirteen years during which time he had books published on racism
and policing. He set up the pilot project for the Home Office experiment
into "non custodial treatment of offenders" which subsequently
became a piece of national legislation relating to criminal justice.

Liz Blackman did not join the Labour Party until she was 39
but her rise through the political ranks since then has been swift.
A former head teacher, she joined Broxtowe Borough Council in 1989.
By 1995 she was its deputy leader. Two years later she had been elected
MP for Erewash. Since then she has campaigned for an inquiry into
the licensing of airguns and fought for more lottery money to be given
to the East Midlands.
