Norton's theatre is lavishly decorated with murals depicting pantomime
characters. The theatre's professional pantomimes have become a cherished
institution, with no concessions to TV celebrity. At one time they were
written by Graeme Garden, a member of The Goodies comedy trio in the Seventies,
who lives locally. The first panto was staged in 1973 while the theatre
was still being converted from a warehouse: The Beauty and the Beast ran
for four performances in the Town Hall.
