The writers Evelyn Waugh, John Donne and Jonathan Swift all studied at Hertford College - though only Waugh would have known its famous bridge. The story in Waugh's book, Brideshead Revisited, begins in Oxford when the two main characters meet as undergraduates. The famously sharp writer admitted wasting his own time at the university.
