Waterloo Road
Waterloo Road: (L-R) Jack Rimmer (Jason Merrells) and Eddie Lawson (Neil Morrissey)

Waterloo Road series three

Episode synopses

Episode one

Ìý

Waterloo Road opens its doors for a new term and, following the shocking murder of Izzie Redpath, head teacher Jack Rimmer and new deputy head Eddie Lawson are on air at the local radio station. As the new dynamic team running the school, they are keen to promote their new policy on inclusion – no matter the circumstances or abilities, all kids are welcome at Waterloo Road.

Ìý

Although he won a national bravery award for defending Izzie against her attacker, Jack secretly blames himself and is struggling to come to terms with what happened. He is going through a private hell, but the love and support of Davina Shackleton – and a large supply of anti-depressants – keep him afloat.

Ìý

Meanwhile, Tom is still reeling from the death of Izzie and blames Jack for playing the hero that night. Now a single dad to Izzie's daughters, Chlo and Mika, Tom is plunged into another family crisis when he finds out Chlo and Donte have secretly taken off to get married. He races to the registry office, but will he get there before they exchange their vows?

Ìý

Steph Haydock, meanwhile, is relishing her new position as Head of Pastoral Care and has the power heels to match her more serious responsibilities. However, disaster looms when new inclusion pupil Karla Bentham, who has Asperger syndrome (a form of autism), is placed in her less than capable hands. The day descends into utter chaos when English teacher Grantly Budgen is on the receiving end of one of Karla's violent outbursts.

Ìý

Jack has taken on a group of gifted and talented pupils to improve the school's exam results, but Eddie feels uneasy about their privileged treatment in contrast to the rest of the Waterloo Road kids. Jack discovers Karla has been violent in her previous schools, and doctors her files. He knows Waterloo Road doesn't have the support in place to deal with her full blown Asperger's, and he's spent the money elsewhere.

Ìý

Young newly-qualified teacher Jasmine Koreshi arrives for her first day at Waterloo Road. She's absolutely dreading her first class and is desperate for any advice the other teachers can give her. Grantly sees it as the perfect opportunity to palm off his most difficult pupils on her, and Tom and Grantly later take bets on how long she's going to last.

Ìý

Finally, viewers meet the attractive new drama teacher, Matt Wilding, who is late for his first day. He's an instant hit with the girls, but, unknown to them, he has a secret – a gorgeous and similarly fit boyfriend he has returned from Greece with. Matt promises Jack a school musical extravaganza, but he now has the problem of how to write it.
