The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency: Jill Scott is Mma Precious Ramotswe

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

Jill Scott plays Mma Ramotswe

Heading up the cast as Mma Ramotswe, Jill Scott comments: "She's 80% spirit. There's a fire inside of Precious Ramotswe and I like her, I am proud of her."

Although the film is whimsical and at times broadly comic Jill is not going for caricature.

"I'm not making it too big, not all her thought processes are exposed. People here in Botswana are gentle and show a great deal of respect for each other, so we've made sure that if there's any so-called 'silly' humour it comes at the right time.

"It seems that the spirit of Precious and that of Botswana in general blessed the production. In fact everyone involved felt blessed to be making McCall Smith's story come to the screen with the most integrity and joy."

Jill Scott is a leading American R&B, soul and jazz artist, songwriter, actress and poet.

Since releasing her first album in 2000, she has won numerous awards including two coveted Grammys.

Her acting career took off in 2004. She played Donna in several episodes of UPN's series Girlfriends.

Other film work includes Rosemary in Cavedweller, starring Kevin Bacon; Big Mama Thornton in Hound Dog, herself in Michel Gondry's Dave Chapelle's Block Party and most recently, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married.
