Eurovision Song Contest 2008
Andy Abraham

About Andy Abraham

Andy has already had the chance to prove to the nation that he's incredibly musically gifted. He won the hearts and minds of millions of viewers of The X Factor with his vocal talents and endearing personality. He remains very much a man of the people.

Ìý

The release of his first album The Impossible Dream made chart history, selling 176,689 copies in its first week and reaching double platinum status.

Ìý

Andy co-wrote his song for the Eurovision Song Contest. Even If is a feelgood funky love song about a man who has found genuine love with his chosen girl. He wants to let her know that he's committed to her and won't let her down.

Ìý

Andy hopes his song will capture the imagination of the Eurovision audience. "A good Eurovision track should be catchy, memorable and original," he says.

Ìý

Eurovision is special to him, as it is something he always watched as a youngster with his mother and, being musically minded, he was naturally drawn to it. It was always such an annual family tradition to sit around the TV watching all that international talent. He cites the contest as the original TV talent show.

Ìý

Looking back at some of the great winners of the past such as Dana, Johnny Logan and Bucks Fizz, he admires their ability to create further great songs after the competition.

Ìý

With the imminent release of his third album, also entitled Even If, Andy too has high hopes for further success in the UK and Europe.

Ìý

His favourite Eurovision track is What's Another Year? by Johnny Logan, because it's such as beautifully constructed song.

Ìý

Andy is hopeful that, once viewers hear his song, it will stick out in their minds enough to fall in love with it. "It's a real crowd pleaser," he chuckles.

Interview with Andy

Ìý

Why did you decide to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest?

I like the idea and am hugely proud to represent my country and it's an ideal opportunity for me to highlight my song-writing talents. I just thought I'd go for it!

Ìý

Tell us about the song you're performing.

Even If is about love and loyalty and is a song I co-wrote. It has a real groove and tempo which makes you feel like dancing.

Ìý

How did you feel when the public voted for you in Eurovision: Your Decision?

I was freaked out! The public voted for me and my song. I was over the moon. They believe, like I do, that Even If is a song for the masses. The UK audience have once again been behind me and I will try my best to make them proud out in Serbia. The contest should be all about the song and I really hope people in Europe give the song a chance.

Ìý

What are your favourite things about Eurovision?

The fact that there are only original songs is great. I like the different styles which range from traditional to commercial and appeal to a wide variety of nations and genders. I love the way each country's artists come together under one roof to celebrate their creation of original songs.

Ìý

What is your all-time favourite Eurovision moment?

When Dana International won because it meant it was okay to be different and be accepted.

Ìý

Why do you think people love Eurovision?

I feel that people love the patriotic side of the competition and really get behind the contestant that's representing their country.

Ìý

What do you think of previous years' winners?

Memorable ones have been fantastic. Particularly Abba, Bucks Fizz, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Celine Dion and Dana International. Some others have been… interesting!

Ìý

What are your first memories of Eurovision?

When Abba sang Waterloo - that was when I became a Eurovision viewer.

Ìý

You co-wrote this song. Why is this important to you?

It was so important for me to be involved in the writing and creative process of this song because, it makes it more performance more believable and it shows the audience another side to me. Even If was written as a universal song and should appeal to all nations, no matter who you are.
