Complete operas and ballets
Two pivotal 19th-century operas in the tradition of the French grande opéra are given their first complete performances at the Proms in 2011: Rossini's William Tell with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, under Antonio Pappano () and Berlioz's rarely heard adaptation of Weber's Der Freischütz conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner with his Monteverdi Choir and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique ().
In its annual visit to the Proms, Glyndebourne Festival Opera brings Handel's Rinaldo (), while Valery Gergiev conducts his Mariinsky Orchestra in the first complete Proms performance of Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake ().
