Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a query about Bargain Hunt, our frequently asked questions might provide the answer you need.

Can I apply to be on Bargain Hunt?

Yes! We're always looking for pairs of people to take part. You need a friend or relative to make up your team. You don't have to be a collector - but you do need plenty of enthusiasm. Please note that both team members must be over 18. There is no upper age limit so long as you're fit for the challenge. Applicants must not be employees of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳, nor have worked recently for, or with the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳.

How do I apply?

Fill in the form on the page. Put in as much detail as you can, as that will increase your chances of success.

How do you decide who gets on the show?

Our researchers go through all the applications, and if they like yours, they'll ask you to record a short video and send it in. If you're still interested, you will be invited to an ‘audition’ online, where the researchers get a feel for how you react being on TV.

Do I need to be an expert or collector?

No. We're interested in lively people who love antiques and collectables as much as we do. Enthusiasm is the key - but a little knowledge can help. Your team expert will help you find bargains at the antiques fair.

How soon will you let me know if I have been selected?

We have so many applications, we cannot reply to them all individually. We'll get in touch as soon as we make a decision. And if you don't get selected first time, we may get back in touch next time we are filming in your area. This may be months or even a year after you first apply.

How long will filming take?

Filming is a slow process. You need to be available all day on the shopping day at the antiques fair, and all day at the auction. However, when it comes to the teams' one hour shopping ... you only get ONE hour.

Can I choose which colour (red or blue) my team is?

That's usually decided before filming, but we can sometimes give you a specific colour if you tell us a preference when you apply.

How do you decide who wins?

Easy. It's the team that makes the most money at the sale.

Who supplies the money?

Bargain Hunt gives each team £300 to spend.

Can we keep any unspent money?

No. Your expert will use that to buy a bonus item.

Can we keep the items we buy?

No. They are sold at auction as part of the show.

Can we keep any money our items make?

Yes.

Can I buy items at the auction?

No. We have a strict "no buying" rule for contestants and crew at the sale.

Can I bring my family or friends to watch the filming?

Filming takes a lot of time and attention, so we cannot cater for other members of your family or friends on location.

Can I watch Bargain Hunt being filmed?

Our small busy team put all their effort into making the programmes, so we can't cater for people watching. They may also be busy in the middle of filming and unable to stop and chat. But if you see us filming at an antiques fair, do give us a cheery wave.

Will I appear on TV if I'm at an antiques fair or auction?

Yes, you may appear in the background of filming if you attend an antiques fair or auction where we have agreement with the owners to film a programme. If you do not want to be featured, please approach the crew and let them know.

How many items can I buy?

You MUST buy three items.

Can we buy anything we want?

We like you to choose items you think will make a profit at auction. We will advise what the auctioneer has told us does and does not sell well at the particular sale used for your programme. We also have a few rules. No weapons (including swords). We are also very wary of items made of animal products or parts. And if you buy anything large, make sure you can carry it!

I have a disability - can I be on the show?

Yes, of course. Most venues have disabled access and our team will do all they can to help. To help us, it's best to let us know any special requirements in advance.

When will the Bargain Hunt I took part in be on television?

We usually make four or five programmes at each antiques fair. The transmission dates are not decided until a few weeks before the programme goes on air - usually several months after filming. We always let contestants know when their programme is due to be aired.

Can I get a DVD of Bargain Hunt?

No, but you can watch a selection of recent programmes on iPlayer for up to one year after transmission (UK only).
