Sexual violence against older women is ignored or unreported according to new research carried out in Australia. Researchers cite an 'enormous silence' around the topic because there is a belief that older women are ‘asexual’ and unlikely to be assaulted. The new study has been titled Norma's Project after an 84-year-old woman, the mother of a researcher, who reported being sexually assaulted while at a respite centre. Norma’s Project was published by La Trobe University in Melbourne and collected the stories of the sexual abuse experienced by Australian women over 65. One of the lead authors of the study is Catherine Barrett. She says that they found that frail older women living in rural areas or dependent on nursing staff were particularly vulnerable. Jenni speaks to chief investigator, Dr Catherine Barrett and Gary Fitzgerald, chief executive of Action on Elder Abuse here in the UK.

Last week the Bolivian government passed a new law allowing children as young as 10 to work. The minimum age was previously 14, in line with rules from the International Labour Organisation, but latest figures suggest over 740,000 children in Bolivia were nonetheless working illegally. Those in favour say the new law simply acknowledges the reality of child labour in Bolivia, whilst critics say it is out of step with the international effort to eradicate child labour around the world.
