Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From comedian and writer Paul Kerensa:听

Always a delight to pause with a thought 鈥 though if I鈥檓 honest, often I feel like a fraud. Other Pause For Thoughters are bishops, rabbis, faith leaders extraordinaire! I鈥檓 a comedian, who seemingly leaned on a 成人论坛 door, and somehow stumbled into the room with the big red light and the microphone. I feel like Guy Goma 鈥 that poor chap a decade ago, who came to the 成人论坛 for a job interview and ended up live on the news channel thanks to a name mix-up. I believe he鈥檚 Director-General now.

As a stand-up who kneels down, I鈥檓 rarely on time at Sunday church, after late Saturday gigs 鈥 so again I sometimes wonder what I鈥檝e walked into. Recently I rushed in and gatecrashed a christening: visitors in every seat, from a host of backgrounds.

It meant that at the prayers for the christened baby, the language used reflected these differences. A corduroy-clad godfather from a lofty, high church background, gave a centuries-old prayer: 鈥淲e beseech thee, O God, shape your christened servant after the pattern of your own divine beauty, may it be clear that he belongs to you, O Creator of the Universe.鈥 It was pretty epic.

But then a godmother, from a different church: less liturgy, less corduroy, more T-shirts, and more spirit-led. Her prayer wasn鈥檛 centuries or even seconds old, but unwritten 鈥 vocalised as she felt moved, more like: 鈥淒ear God, would you really care and protect, help this child prosper and just, feel your love, all the time.鈥

I sensed both godparents felt like they didn鈥檛 quite fit, but I adore those differences. On the face of it, they made an awkward duo. But they united to tell this new life that it belonged. Life in all its variance means seven billion different humans have seven billion different mouthpieces.

So even when I feel like I don鈥檛 belong, I try and remember that seven billion others can feel likewise 鈥 and even then, we can make others belong. I鈥檒l stumble through many new doors into new rooms, jobs, situations 鈥 but when there, I reckon it鈥檚 how I include those I find within, that really matters. So whether I鈥檓 meant to be here or there鈥檚 someone outside with a similar name 鈥 thanks for making me belong.听
