Young Parents Hostel
Three homeless young parents get a lifeline place in a hostel. Helped by hands-on case workers, they fight to raise their children and achieve the dream of a home of their own.
Documentary following the ups and downs of nine months in the lives of three young people rising to the challenges of being a new, single parent and being homeless. Each one has been thrown the lifeline of a place in a hostel in Cardiff run for young people in their situation. It’s a roof over their head for them and their child while they wait for a home. But with little money, facing stigma others don’t and the stress of being a parent to handle, it won’t be easy. What they all share is a determination to become the best parents they can be.
Thankfully, this hostel comes with two hands-on caseworkers Pauline and Gill who go above and beyond supporting the tenants as they strive to achieve their dream of becoming the best parents they can be and getting that permanent home of their own.
Kate, 20, has been sharing a room at the hostel with her 3-year-old son Oscar for almost a year. When she fell pregnant at 16 she had to leave home and she’s desperate to be closer to her family. She currently has to catch four buses daily which leaves a big dent in her small income, to get Oscar to school. Callum, also 20, is the first dad ever at the hostel. He has taken on full custody of son Bailey but is being monitored by social services and is fighting to prove he’s a capable dad. Learning from scratch and on the job, there’s a long road ahead but he will do all it takes for Bailey’s sake – even learning to cook. Danielle also found herself without a home while pregnant and had baby Layla shortly after arriving at the hostel. Suffering with post-natal depression and the demands of a newborn, Danielle is a worry for Pauline and Gill who have a plan to raise her confidence and help her mix with other parents.
