The Isle of Muck, in the Inner Hebrides, is home to the MacEwen family. Lawrence, the charismatic patriarch of the MacEwen family and laird of the tiny island, is struggling to accept he controls neither his life nor the isle he so loves.

It has been his mission to preserve the fragile society on the island and pass it onto future generations. However, he is also battling to accept the inevitability of change.
