Ciamar a tha fuil-mìos a’ toirt buaidh air boireannaich? How do periods affect women?
Dha cuid de bhoireannaich, ’s urrainn dhan chuairt aca a bhith a’ tachairt gu h-à bhaisteach, ach do chuid eile, chan eil e cho furasta agus bidh tinneasan sònraichte a’ dèanamh cron orra. Bhon fheadhainn a bhios a’ dèiligeadh ri Sionndram Ioma-Ghucach nan Ughagan (SIGU) chun a’ Chrà idh, tha sinn a’ faighinn a-mach ciamar a tha an t-à m dhen mhìos a’ toirt buaidh air am beatha là itheil. Tha sinn cuideachd a’ coinneachadh ri na h-eòlaichean, an t-Ollamh Colin Duncan agus an t-Ollamh Andrew Horne bhon Ionad airson Slà inte Ghineamhainn gus tuigse agus mìneachadh a thoirt dhuinn air na tinneasan seo.
Tha sinn a’ coinneachadh ri na peathraichean, Claire agus Emma NicLeòid à Scalpaigh, air a bheil SIGU ach aig a bheil siomptaman gu tur eadar-dhealaichte. Ciamar a tha cùisean air atharrachadh dhaibhsan thar nam bliadhnaichean agus ciamar a tha e a’ toirt buaidh air am beatha bho là gu là ?
An dèidh trì bliadhna as aonais sileadh mìos, roghnaich Mà iri NicLeòid à Leòdhas, tè eile air a bheil SIGU, an dòigh-beatha aice atharrachadh a chiallaich gun thòisich an cuairt aice a-rithist. Airson Mà iri, tha seo a’ ciallachadh dòchas às ùr gun urrainn dhi fhèin agus an duine aice teaghlach a thòiseachadh is iad a-nis a’ coimhead ri slighe tro IVF.
Tha tòrr còmhraidh ann an-drà sta mu dheidhinn fuil-mìos agus spòrs. Leis an sin, tha sinn a’ bruidhinn ris an luth-chleasaiche ainmeil, Eilish McColgan gus faighinn a-mach mar a tha an t-à m dhen mhìos air buaidh a thoirt air a beatha fhèin agus air a dreuchd agus tha sinn cuideachd a’ coimhead ri na stuthan a th’ air a’ mhargaidh ceangailte ri fuil-mìos a’ sealltainn gu bheil na là ithean de chriosan mìosail seachad le taghadh nas fharsainge a-nis aig boireannaich.
For some women a period is a normal monthly occurrence but for others, it’s not as straightforward and they may be affected by conditions that impact their menstrual cycle. From those dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Endometriosis, we find out how symptoms encroach on their daily lives. We talk to experts, Professor Colin Duncan and Professor Andrew Horne from the Centre for Reproductive Health, to help us understand what each of these conditions mean.
We also meet sisters, Claire and Emma Macleod, from Scalpay, both living with PCOS but who have very different symptoms. How has the condition changed for them over the years and how does it affect them from day to day?
After almost three years without a period, Mairi Macleod from Lewis, also living with PCOS decided to change her lifestyle which brought back her monthly cycle. For Mairi, this means new hope of being able to start a family, as she and her partner are now investigating IVF.
Periods in sport is a conversation that has only just begun. We talk to Scottish athlete Eilish McColgan to find out how her monthly cycle has impacted her own life and career. With the days of sanitary belts in the dim and distant past, we also take a look at the wide variety of products that are available for women.
