Adam Walton delves into the Science Café archives, recovering interviews with three of Wales most notable scientists, who this year have been entered into the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is a record of the many people who have shaped British history, from the Romans to key 21st century figures.

Among them we remember coal miners son and pioneering Chemist, Sir John Meurig Thomas. He was the former director of the Royal Institution and a founding fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (1932 – 2020).

Another renowned Welsh Chemist, Sir John Cadogan, served as the Royal Society of Chemistry’s president from 1982 to 1984. He was also the first director general of the UK’s Research Councils and inaugural president of the Learned Society of Wales (1930 – 2020).

And Nobel Prize winning Climate Scientist, Sir John Houghton. Houghton was director of the Meteorological Office from 1983 – 1991, a professor at Oxford, and co-founder of the John Ray Initiative to bring together scientific and religious perspectives on the environmental crisis (1931 – 2020).
