Off-Peak Performance

What's causing cancellations and delays on one of the most important railways in the country? Johnny I'Anson travels on the first off-peak evening train from London to Manchester.

Being a rail user in Britain can be stressful, and that stress is summed up by the so called 鈥淓uston Dash鈥. The dash is a Darwinian rush to get your seat on the first off-peak service heading north to Manchester and beyond.

It鈥檚 a race which tests nerve, skill and speed, as passengers dodge kids and suitcases, jump queues, forget niceties, and knock over anyone in their path to win.

Presenter Johnny I鈥橝nson is among the runners. He鈥檚 travelling on the 18:53, run by Avanti West Coast service, a company which has been criticised for its poor performance. Avanti says its service is improving.

Will Johnny get a seat, and what are his fellow passengers鈥 experiences?

It鈥檚 just one snapshot of a single trip, but through the journey, Johnny meets those who travel regularly on this important route.

He finds out what might lie behind some cancellations and delays, and what can be done to improve the experience for the millions who use this route each year.
