VIDEO: The importance of being Janis
The first name Janis is traditionally one of the most popular names in Latvia. Janis has a name-day celebration on midsummer eve, as does the female equivalent, Liga.
A real-life Janis and Liga tell you about the traditions surrounding the special midsummer celebration on June 23rd, and how, before 1989, the Communist authorities tried to take over those traditions. Janis Laizans and Liga Miklasevica are sitting in a traditional Baltic fisherman's house at the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum in Riga.
