Affable and well-meaning, though not very bright, Joe is unfairly tarred with the Macknade brush.
Like his father, Bill, he is largely unemployed, though he does odd jobs as a carnival barker. He has poor health, is small in stature and famously rotten teeth. He is desperate to enlist to escape an unhappy family home and a life of poverty.
