Howard returns to Britain having lost his hand serving as an Army doctor. Old family friend and best man to , Howard’s ability to listen makes him a welcome, if unorthodox, addition to the Vicarage.
He forms a connection with through her help at his informal trauma clinic. His instinct is to help heal others through progressive, novel methods which seek to treat the mind as well as the body. Deeply damaged by war, Howard’s understanding of trauma is galvanised by those around him, such as , who have also experienced it first-hand.
