Jan鈥檚 story

Jan Irvine is a 62-year-old transgender woman from Midlothian. 14 years ago, at the age of 48, Jan finally faced up to the truth of how she felt inside and came out as trans to her wife and son. Her marriage collapsed and she became estranged from her son and grandchildren. Jan is not one to wallow in self-pity though. She has decided to make it her mission to educate the public on trans issues in order to make life easier for future generations.

Key fact
Many transgender women try to hide their true identity by following particularly masculine careers, getting married and having children.

I felt quite privileged to being one of those asked to take part in Transsexual Stories with the opportunity that I might be part of something which could make a real difference.

When I met the crew for the first time on day one of filming, knowing that Leeze was part of the production put me at ease as she has great experience in working in the media and a wealth of knowledge on transgender life. She was a true asset to getting me to talk about things that I most likely would never speak about, she understood what I had to say and was great at getting me to open up.

I鈥檓 never going to change the world, but I would really like to shape the future.

Throughout the filming I mentioned that I did talks at Edinburgh College and also had a passion for bringing what I went through in my life to a comic perspective — the fact that the production crew got me a spot at the comedy club was an absolute dream of mine to do. I was very nervous but with the help and encouragement from the production crew, as well as Leeze’s ability to get anyone to do anything through her positive nature, meant fulfilling that dream was possible.

Throughout being filmed I never lost touch of the objective — I’d hoped it would highlight just what it meant to be transgender and to answer some of the questions others would ask — and to let other transgendered people know they are not alone and that we and they can have a full, rewarding life.

Being very well known in my community from my traffic warden days meant when cameras were following me around I got more noticed than usual but I've had nothing but support from my community for the documentary and positive feedback.
