2000: First Britons reach North Pole unaided

Two Royal Marine commandos became the first Britons to reach the geographical North Pole without outside support on 17 May 2000.

Corporal Alan Chambers and Marine Charlie Paton spent 70 days dragging 250lb sledges 700 miles across the ice.

The Marines suffered numerous setbacks en route to the Pole, including a tent fire and minor frostbite. The pair had run out of food a day before reaching the Pole.
