1998: Real IRA announces ceasefire
The Real IRA, a dissident republican group, announced a ceasefire on 8 September 1998.
The announcement came one month after a bombing by the paramilitary group in Omagh, County Tyrone, which killed 29 people.
The Real IRA was born out of a split in the Provisional IRA in 1997, in response to attitudes towards the peace process in Northern Ireland.
