The Met Office has issued further warnings for snow and ice on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Much of southern England and the Midlands is covered by a yellow warning with icy patches expected to form this evening and overnight.

Wintry showers and ice will continue to affect northern Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as North Sea and Irish Sea coasts.

This follows the first snowfall of the season for much of the UK earlier on Tuesday, which saw transport disrupted and nearly 200 schools closed.

As much as 12cm (4.7 in) of snow was recorded in Watnall in Nottinghamshire with a covering of snow too for parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia.

Sleet and snow even fell for a while in central London and the Home Counties.

Significant accumulations of snow have been affecting northern Scotland since the start of the week.

The snow will not stick everywhere as the ground is not cold enough in November. But as the snowfall risk eases for many the extra moisture will refreeze. Ice is then likely to become the main issue in bitterly cold Arctic air.

A brisk northerly wind will continue to drive further wintry showers into northern Scotland and through North Sea and some Irish Sea coasts. As much as 10cm (4in) of snow could still settle on higher ground with 15-20cm (6-8in) possible above 300m (1,000ft) in the Highlands.

As the winds lighten in inland areas through the night ice will form on untreated surfaces, causing more potential transport disruption into Wednesday morning's rush hour.

There will be a widespread frost across the UK. With clearing skies tonight temperatures will fall well below freezing, with -2C to -5C widely.

Last night Braemar in the Highlands plunged to -11C which is the lowest this early in the season for more than 25 years.

We could see something similar in sheltered northern spots again tonight, especially over lying snow.

Although there will be some sunshine for many for the rest of the working week, it is set to stay cold with temperatures below the seasonal average by around 5C.

By day temperatures will struggle in mid-single figures with widespread air frosts by night and the risk of further wintry showers towards exposed coasts and hills.

The UK Health Security agency has issued an for northern and eastern England.

It looks increasingly likely there will be a dramatic change on Saturday.

A very deep area of low pressure will sweep in from the Atlantic, cutting off the cold Arctic flow from the north but bringing strong winds, severe gales and heavy rain.

For a while there could be blizzards as the fronts hit the cold air, especially over higher ground in the north.

Milder air will be dragged in with temperatures building through the day and evening. Overnight lows for some may not dip much past 13C, a staggering rise in just 24 hours.
