Conduction, convection and radiation
Description
Sara is freezing so she asks her handy science app, Ada, for help. Ada explains the process of conduction, convection and radiation. Ada takes Sara through various scenarios, discussing how she could warm up her house. By describing conduction, convection and radiation Ada also discusses how to make heat transfer more efficient and what states of matter heat is transferred through.
Classroom Ideas
Describe conduction on a molecular level using the information from the animation. Compare the convection of heat in water by adding potassium manganite and heating over a Bunsen burner. Use this demonstration along with the animation to describe how a convection current is established. Use a graph to compare the absorption and emission rates of materials of different colours after watching the animation. Use the animation to describe which colours are the best emitters of infrared radiation. Compare the density of different materials by weighing them, calculating (or measuring) volume and calculating the density; Use this data to compare the density of solid, liquid and gases. Describe the density of different materials based on their ability to establish the conduction or convection of heat.
