Hard Hat Time: Building 成人论坛 Studios

It's been a full-on first month.

I got to wear fetching hi-viz gear on a huge building site courtesy of 成人论坛 Bristol's DIY SOS (above). I also witnessed close-up 成人论坛 Science's collaborative Glasgow-London teamwork, got grilled at a TV Creativity Forum by hit sit-com Citizen Khan's creator Adil Ray, sat on an RTS Cambridge panel with three of the world's biggest indies and chewed the 成人论坛 Studios fat with Salford's religion, drama, comedy, current affairs and entertainment leaders. In addition, I was top of the bill (ok, last on the running order...) at the 成人论坛 Production Awards, hosted by Strictly's Claudia Winkleman, featuring Sirs David Attenborough and David Jason. An average September for in-house production.

Actually, I might as well run with the hard hat metaphor before anyone else does. It's a tough and exhilarating time - consultations, reviews, industry politics, money, competition, the 成人论坛 Charter, you name it. Body armour will probably come in handy soon. But if we can build ourselves the right, strong foundations, 成人论坛 Studios could be a brilliant addition to the UK's world-beating creative sector – as DG Tony Hall said, a sector that needs to fight for British content in the face of declining PBS funding, down by 15% in the five years up to 2013.

Our 成人论坛 Production Awards spoke volumes about what we do so well right across the UK, creating some of the biggest stories of the year, like award-winning EastEnders’ week of live shows, with more than 20 million viewers tuning in.

We are central to the UK's thriving production sector – thousands of dedicated people at broadcasters and companies large and small making TV of the highest quality. It’s a global success story - talent and formats find success abroad from Bake Off to Top Gear to Strictly, and in turn, international producers come here for the creativity and skills they know we can offer – look no further than Belfast-produced Game of Thrones for proof.

I really believe 成人论坛 Studios can offer something unique to the industry. At a time when more and more leading indies are being acquired by US companies, we may end up the only UK-owned producer of real scale, working on behalf of the public.

We can offer a depth of expertise across every genre – at a time when a lot of commercial focus is on high-end drama and formatted entertainment only. We have dedicated teams right across the UK – at a time when our country itself is becoming more devolved but the bulk of the TV industry is still very London-centric. And, we can deliver great value to the UK licence-fee payers who fund the 成人论坛 – by ensuring that all the profit from content we create is channelled back into the 成人论坛 to invest in new programmes.

The UK production sector I have worked in for 30 years is a special thing, and it hasn’t come about by accident. So, we can either look at how the market is changing and cross our fingers – wait and see, hope for the best – or we can take big, bold steps now to keep it special. That's why we have already set out the details of the 成人论坛’s plans for the UK creative sector, including 成人论坛 Studios, and next week we'll be responding to the options for 成人论坛 production that the Government set out in their Green Paper.

In the meantime, what matters here most is getting great stuff on screen – our creativity. It's been a few weeks of really enjoyable viewing for me: the epic Countdown to Life science landmark is stunning, and Doctor Who's fine opening episodes and Peter Capaldi's brilliant axe-wielding time lord have all the ambition of a Saturday night at the movies.

The NHU's summer of content from Big Blue Live to Wild Atlantic has been truly world-class. Just last weekend the most exciting opening to Strictly Come Dancing any of us can recall, and a brilliant run of Dragon's Den for 成人论坛 Two has been succeeded on Sunday evenings by Special Forces - Ultimate Hell Week, massive in my house.

So what about something for this weekend? The extraordinary Anne-Marie Duff in Drama North's atmospheric crime serial From Darkness this Sunday on 成人论坛 One is a gripper.

Nearly 20 years ago I commissioned the first-ever DIY SOS when I was Controller of 成人论坛 One. So when I visited Nick Knowles and the team in Manchester last week and witnessed first-hand what the production was now delivering with stunning public service values and huge ambition, it left me feeling very excited about what British production can do - on this occasion renovating 62 houses which will create a veterans’ housing community with space for much needed therapy and counselling. Yet another reason why I am proud to stick on a hard hat to build 成人论坛 Studios.
