Martin Simpson on his current favourite sounds

Mike Harding | 14:39 UK time, Monday, 16 March 2009

Martin Simpson writes:

My friend Josh Michaell in California made me a number of CDs of various people at the end of last year when I was staying with him, and I've been listening to them a great deal.

My favourite is a compilation which goes from the excellent
singing 'Felix the Soldier' to live on the radio in the early 1970s, a monumental live solo, , fiddle player Marcus Martin and much more all sitting comfortably
together.

Then there's John Lee Siegler on another blues compilation, playing fingerstyle electric slide guitar and singing, accompanied by spoons, a song which includes the floating verses based on 'Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot', which can be found in Scots and
Irish ballads.

Folk music is amazing in its breadth and depth, although after a recent gig I was again forced to admit that probably the best definition of folk music in this country is "music which accompanies a raffle".
