Here's Emily with details of tonight's programme:

Our correspondent Tim Whewell and his producer and cameraman have spent all day in the thick of the riots in Cairo. So comprehensively has the country's communication system been shut down that it's been almost impossible to stay in touch with them all day. We hope to bring you the latest from them tonight.

But of course, this story is not about our difficulties in bringing you a broadcast, but whether Egypt is on the verge of an all-out revolution. And if Egypt - often seen as the leading force in the Arab world and the political gateway to the West - follows Tunisia, then which countries might be next?

So many questions follow that one: How will Western leaders approach relations with Egypt if their key ally in the Arab world is overturned? Is this Barack Obama's longed-for Change We Can Believe In? Or is it Change That Will Terrify the Living Daylights out of him?

We'll ask key players in the UK government and the US.

And, the Archbishop of Canterbury has called on the UK government to rethink the status of Ugandan asylum seekers in the light of the murder of prominent gay activist David Kato. Will they? We're on the case.

Do join me for more at 10.30pm on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two.

No - you are right NewsyNighty. "We have a team on the ground" is sooo much more sexy and edgy - going forward.

But some of them do seem to speak remarkably good English - I could understand every word. . .

    POP GOES THE WEASEL

I am watching Gus doing Chilcot. I was struck that despite his distaste for buzz-phrases, he kept using 'safe space' (being what Tony required to mention going to war, and get away with it.)

I suggest 'space' is as absence of anything but is, here, doing the job of the term 'CABINET MINISTERS'. By my reading, Gus was avoiding saying that Blair needed to speak among 'TRUSTWORTHY CABINET MINISTERS', so he reformulated as: "in a safe space". The Weasels worked overtime on that one.

What a wretched state of affairs, going forward.

    humm.

the US and UK rulers are in a quandary regarding the uprisings - for them it is similar to a game of 'Jenga'.

their greatest fear is that Liberal arab leaders will come to the fore, and build liberal democracy, eject the western multinats, and develop their countries for the benefit of their peoples. Even a brief reading of the history of the region will confirm that. Of course, to admit this openly would be political suicide for them, plus their automatic instinct to lie through their teeth to us.

but they should be aware - that wikileaks and sister sites will be keeping watch on what they ACTUALLY do. During Iran's Green Revolution, western media companies were fully complicit in the closing down of the media networks, and revealing to Ahmadinadjad's Regime the identities of the organisers and protesters. Expect the same again, whatever nice words the talking heads come out with, and expect us to swallow without question.

The US prefers to have religious fundamentalism and social disorder, ethnic division and chaos, rather than developing countries. And it cares not the cost to achieve that. It is also aware that the best way to discredit potential liberal leaders is for the US to *publicly* support them.

as the bbc series on Justice showed if germany's constitution is dominated by the language of Kant the uk's is dominated by the language of medieval apartheid.

If, as the show suggests, utilitarianism describes the modern world which is a labyrinth of moral confusion over what the good is, then those even with false certainties are seen as gods [like blair].

muslims do not need kant, utilitarianism, norman apartheid monarchy model nor any other 'satanic' or man made invention and do not feel 'confused' about what the good is. They have a book. if its in the book then its good. if its banned by the book its bad and if its not in the book its doubtful and best left alone.

so we have an internally conflicted west [that pursues many different doctrines] dominated by moral confusion trying to understand the certainties of the arab street. so the west is fearful because it has no recognition of the good and so cannot judge what is good or not. The west has no articulation of the good and merely mumble hypocrisies.

as for the justice show i would have preferred the style of the yale professor who lectures are online but at least its a start and i welcome the recognition that examining philosophy is an art that needs to be revivified if only to prevent charlatans from getting away with easy tricks and plunging us all into tyranny of the idiots.

    SOMETHING'S BOTHERING ME (#21 link)

Our culture, of killing Johnnie Foreigner (but only at home) is freely inculcated into our young (as advertised on TV) such that many are led to, not only go killing, but to call it 'the job they love'. This is OK apparently. When JFs are enticed to this country to 'do the jobs we won't do (at that price) and they bring their culture of - say - negativity towards homosexuality with them, then another bit of our culture decrees it a crime.

Is it me? Or is this the Age of Perversity?

#22: jaunty, i think most Westerners DO have a pretty good idea what is "the good", even if our philosophers get a little confused. And i think most of us would find much common ground with the 'Arab Street', as you put it.

human rights, non-exploitation, and preparing a better future for our kids. Where we find inspiration may be a little different, but at core we are the same. And we are certainly opposing the same factors: a corrupt ruling elite that regards itself as "naturally" in power, and the right to lie to us to achieve their real ends, which basically come down to enriching themselves at our cost.

our corrupt Govt is cutting taxes on Corporations, and Banks, allowing truly insane bonuses and perks, whilst closing schools, hospitals, and selling off everything else they can get their hands on, whilst the people of the Middle East, apart from rare exceptions, never had it so good as us. Mainly because the West used its military and economic power to install dictatorships. But now they are rising up, and want the same rights as we do - and our enemy is the same. Those who live in huge mansions, and bank in tax-havens.

there are enough resources for everyone to have a good life - but not when a few have wealth of £bns whilst the majority beg for scraps. This is not "envy", it is a cold, rational look at the state of the world today.

the question is, can we achieve this evolution together?

    #16 lizzy:

in answer to your article, here is a report from the 2005 election. The entire article is worthwhile reading, and in hindsight makes some scary and revelatory reading:

    "The race-card

GIVEN THE LACK of a mass left alternative to New Labour, it is not surprising that the central social and economic issues are not dominating the election campaign. As a result, it is not pensions, pay or the NHS that is the biggest issue but immigration – with 40% of voters thinking it is important, and 23% thinking it is the single most important issue.

There are those on the left who will write off the British working class as a reactionary mass because of the role that immigration is playing in this election. But this is profoundly mistaken. It is, of course, true that racist ideas have gained ground under the impact of racist, anti-immigrant propaganda from New Labour, the Tories and the tabloids. Immigration is being used consciously by New Labour and the Tories as an electoral tool. New Labour hopes it can undercut the Tories and the far-right by stealing their clothes – inevitably, it is having the opposite effect. It is not for nothing that Nick Griffin, the BNP’s leader, described Labour’s former Home Secretary David Blunkett as the BNP’s "best recruiting sergeant".

...At the same time, we have to understand that a major factor in the fear of increased immigration is the fear of seeing already over-stretched, under-funded public services overwhelmed. All the mainstream parties are in favour of privatising and cutting public services, and the vast majority of the population never hear any major force in society arguing against the relentless onslaught. At the same time, every mainstream party, to one degree or another, is attempting to lay the blame for overstretched resources at the door of asylum seekers and immigrants in general. The results are inevitable. "

i don't generally have that much time for socialists, but this article quite accurately covers the last 6 years - and its now going into hyper-drive with this "Coalition Govt".

all 3 main parties were well aware that their program of cuts and privatisations were going to cause hardships, and is it really beyond the realm of possibility that they all colluded to allow high immigration in order to have a handy scape-goat?

are we TRULY going to blame the immigrants for the bad economic policies of our rulers, when all THEY wanted was to find a better life for themselves or experience British culture for a while whilst working-travelling?

do you think there would be any problems with shortages of jobs, health and education etc, if the money the politicians had given to the banks had been spent on ACTUAL UK growth??

--and did we hear the Tories arguing this at the time? No, of course not. Their natural constituency IS the ultra-wealthy, not john and peggy smith.

not that NuLabour or the Liberals are any different, as we can clearly see.

  • Comment number 29.

    #27:

of course, the Tories will reverse this direction. Once they've destroyed our entire economy (apart from banking), and privatised the Health Service, and Education, and our forests, and our roads, and whatever else they can sell which is not theirs, then of course the 'Private Sector' will suddenly start paying taxes (unlike now), and the poor will get wealthier.

    yeah, i believe that too.

  • Comment number 31.

Why is the media getting all excited with the call for democracy in Egypt. Young people wanting civil rights and something that is called democracy. Doesn't anybody see whats really happining. Democracy is a fragile form of govt. It can't work in a country such as Egypt. I heard the word revolution often in the media today but they missed the hidden hand of another group thats behind this. Oh the people are on the street are they. Remember Jimmy Carter and Iran..Revolution! revolution revolution. The libs bought into that one as well.

The western media report what they want to report, they listen and report the words on the revolutionary streets, the people call for democraaaaacy! ..
The media lick their collective lips -that was always gonna be a given with this unfolding event but all the while and all so predictable, they fail to report the real story. And that is: who is orchestrating this so called popular uprising.
The libs are embracing and getting very giddy over the Muslim Brotherhood.
This don't end well. And this was confirmed when I watched another weak kneed speech from Barrie Obama. Cursed with vision anyone?

Tell me I'm wrong..go on, tell me.

the kind of mindset of political leaders, where they will order the deliberate murder of their own citizens to maintain themselves in power - what can you say?

the army should make mubarak stand down, there is already considerable discussion over the ascension due to his considerable age anyway. This would be a perfect opportunity for the secular army to be able to give a modernising, pro-democracy and reform candidate a boost, rather than wait and see the Islamicists gain in popularity due to a long running civil disorder.

#31: kevsey: my post #25 covers all that in detail. But it is not being published, i'm not sure why.

but this is not being "orchestrated" by either Washington or London imho, their public comments would be *very* different if so, more like the Bush Regime's skewed comments after 9/11, for instance. 'They' generally lie to us anyways, but when they are actually out of the loop, the skewing is subtly different.

this is genuine public anger and outrage, just as the UK citizens marches and demos have been. (more this weekend btw!). Certainly, TPTB will try to take advantage of it, try to slip their own 'leaders' into the mix, try to manipulate events so that "western interests are not harmed" (their private investments), whilst at the same time trying to balance what they have to claim openly about "supporting democracy", with their own fears of sparking a similar uprising against THEIR corruption and anti-democratic practices here in the West.

poor wee things, Some sleepless nights ahead for them. :D ;)

    GOOD IS HARD WORK (#22 & #26)

Isn't it a lot easier to be nihilistic or laissez-faire or just bad; particularly if feeling 'it's not fair' - a juvenile state of mind?

Having a sense of the good is one thing, having the self-discipline to adhere to it, quite another. I maintain (you might have noticed) that only mature individuals can achieve a mature society. Currently we are heading 180 degrees in the wrong direction. The good is abandoned, and replaced by THE PERVERSE.

..Davos summit leaves David Cameron and George Osborne feeling bruised...

the financial system has made big money 'going long the taxpayer' ie buying risk because they know the public have to back them because govts won't let the economy go bust. so its no 'risk' really. Its a sure bet.

going long the taxpayer has created a bubble in stocks and commodities the latter of which is an oligarch tax that transfers wealth from the many to the few to ensure the oligarchs are not losing the value of their capital due to inflation.

without a return to moral hazard everyone will keep going 'long the taxpayer'. If there is problem central banks will just print more QE. 800 billion here a trillion there.

so the government should be preparing to allow some global zombie banks to go bust without it closing the clearing system. they should allow new entrants and support them and leave the zombies to die in their debts.

however the shadowy world of pension fund managers [do you know their names? they should be household names given the power their wield] want the public to pay and keep paying.

so the future is its going long the public for a big risk free bonus. No wonder the banks are feeling strident.

What a weird sight seeing Miliband in front of squaddies. I didn't listen to much what he had to say, but i'm sure the boys were captivated by his words. Miliband, a man that was raised in a leftwing radical house hold, educated in a bubble, entered the word of work that did not produce anything nor provide a service to anyone..other than himself. He is the leader of the Labour party, and stands opposite Cameron. Mind you, the same can easily be said of Camaron's background and his lack of experience as well. Neither man has run a business, ran a corner shop, or even had a regular job .. something tells me they would be incapable of running a lemonade stand. The only thing they appear to be good at is standing up and debate and I do that at least 2/3 times a week - albeit laced with jokes - so it ain't a good enough qualification to manage anything of importance. Debating and forming an argument to the lesser mortals -political or other - is not enough, you have to have a mind, a real functioning mind that is full of experience, broad and wide, not narrow like Cam and Milly, neither of these men have that, they are just vanity driven power lapping chaps with no ideas other than getting the usual approval from their fellow political hacks..well it's just not enough is it. And not having this experience was illustrated recently with the departure of Camarons Spin man Andy Coulson. Apparently this has left Camerons only connection to the outside world of ordinary life gone. His reliance on Coulson in having a connection to the ordinary man and woman is a stark reminder that we are led by well meaning but narrow minded convoluted fools ..and parliament is full of them.

regarding the comparison of Egypt with Iran - worth remembering that America was fully complicit with the switch in the Iranian revolution from the liberal forces to fundamentalist Islam - the US deliberately sent back to Iran during the slow fall of the US-backed Shah the fundamentalist cleric Ayatollah Khomeini, a move that undercut the liberal forces that had started and maintained the revolution against the Shah. A Shah, some might remember, that had been violently re-installed and maintained in power by the US in Tehran, after the US became upset because the Iranians elected a liberal(ish) President that was interested in the profits from Iranian oil being used for the benefit of Iranians, and not just stolen in profits by Western oil companies.

there is also some evidence that there was direct communication between the Ayatollahs and Reagan, in that not only were the US hostages kept until Reagan won the election from Carter largely because of Carter's inability to free the hostages, but Reagan also then went on to commit the crime of Iran-gate - selling arms to the fundamentalist Iranian Govt.

BTW, the US hostages were freed literally *minutes* after Reagan was sworn in!

yet of course, throughout the entire episode, the US kept claiming it was only interested in "Peace and Democracy".

before the US reinstalled the Shah, Iran was on course to develop a liberal democracy on the lines of Western Europe, - this was the last thing the US actually wanted, however.

and once their puppet autocratic and brutal Dictator was removed, they made sure that it was fundamentalist Religious forces that took his place, rather than liberal forces.

as mark urban said, having a long drawn out 'revolutionary process' (see the FO's desire for "stability"), will likely lead to the rise of the Islamic Brotherhood, rather than the current youth movement that wants liberal democracy.

and now we can see US politicians pontificating yet again upon "peace and democracy", whilst the people of a nation that has suffered under a Dictator militarily backed by those very same people are rising up, and we are supposed to believe their "good intentions"?

these spokespeople seem to have generalised the meaning of the phrase "stand-up".

#61: mistress, if the water utilities were still owned by local residents and concils, this wouldn't be so bad... all savings go back into improvements, or rate reductions, or even wages for the local workforces, improving the local economies.

however, when the utilities are run as private, profit-making Corporate structres, guess what?

pages 9 & 14 are particularly relevant. This was the result of the LAST time the Tories were allowed access to our publicly-owned bodies, some might wonder at the advisability of letting them have a go at "improving" our Health and Education as well.

still, 60% or so of eligible voters voted for the Big-Three-Party, so i guess its what we wanted... right? :/

Blimey, next thing you'll be telling me is that to get the signal to watch TV that we are uniquely charged for annually, we'll soon have fund a new bit of kit to help them do that...
