Winstone on tour
- 9 Jun 06, 02:20 PM
FRANKFURT - There I was, chatting to Steve "Boo-boo" Smith (left) and Tony Yeates (right) about their drive from London, when their third musketeer saunters up, "Mr Tough Guy" Ray Winstone (centre).
The Hammers fan is an FA ambassador who watched England win at Wembley in 1966, aged nine, although he says his memory is just in "black and white".
The trio have tickets for the England matches and intend to stay the full five weeks, taking in a trip to Austria as well.
With countless away matches under his belt, Ray says it's a much friendlier atmosphere now than in the seventies and the Germans are putting on a great show.
"Even fans without tickets know they can come and see it on a big telly - that's great, they can watch the games with Germans and Brazilians and everyone else."

As the games are about to kick-off, the following document might be useful.
It's a one-page sign warning people not to chat about the games in your vicinity. I've hung mine on the office door. Then closed it.

I'm rooting for England from the US - interestingly the commentators here have called Becks "Michael Beckham" and referred to England as "Germany"...! Oh for the Beeb. GOOD LUCK ENGLAND!!

I'm also getting behind England from the USA having relocated here three years ago.
Nice to see you're doing well Tom, seeing as we both worked at the Croydon Guardian all those years ago!

Hi there from Barbadoos, I was watching the footy today and congrats to England but special mention for T&T for holding Sweden to a draw. To my dismay on my TV here the british commentator was very rude about Trinidad and Tobago they played out of their skins so give them credit don't degrade them by telling us that they shouldn't be there by rights - they earned their place. I hope they show us what they can really do!!! The Soca Warriors (pronouced soaka!!) NOT SOCCER!!
Give credit where credits due instead of mentioning that they have veterans who came out of retirement to play. They certainly weren't complaining about the heat from where I was watching. Trinnies love a party and we could learn a lot from their attitude to life!!!
