1959 - A major fire destroyed the Pavilion at the shore end of the pier. 500 people were trapped along the walkway and had to be rescued by boat.

1976 - On July 29th most of the old Pier Head was destroyed by a fire that made headlines across the world. Half the town turned out to watch the dramatic events.

The following morning the beach was covered with charred timbers, and there was a surge of visitors to the pier as people came to view the damage.

1986 - On June 30th the tanker MV Kingsabbey sailed off course and cut through the pier between the old and new Pier Heads.

One man was in the pier toilets at the time and only just made it out before they tipped over the edge! A 70ft gap was left in the pier and a temporary footbridge was constructed to allow public access to the Pier Head.
