Barbadians affectionately know Barbados as “Little England” with its strong and close links to Britain which have existed since 1625 when Captain John Powell landed and claimed it for England. Just two years later, his brother, Captain Henry Powell, landed a party of 80 English settlers and 10 slaves to establish the island’s first European settlement – Jamestown, at what is now Holetown. By the end of 1628 the colony's mixed population had grown to 2000 as a result of the development of sugar plantations.
During the past 50 years, there has been, in a small way, a complete reversal; Reading in Berkshire has become a Barbadian haven, and is home to their biggest national community outside of Barbados. All it lacks is the sand, the sea and of course the weather.
