Grab5! is a campaign to help kids eat more fresh
fruit and vegetables. Here, pupils at Fairhaven
VA Primary School write about the day when the Grab5! team came
to their school.

The Grab5! team went in class by class. Everybody in the school
tried something and were all rewarded with a sticker or wristband.
Ruth Gainsford, Alison Mackway
and Helen Dalton-Hare were all dressed up as peas and carrots.
Lots of people liked trying new things.
There were pomegranates,
peach pastries, fruitcake, banana custard, oranges, fruit
kebabs, smoothies and strawberries.
Grab 5 is a Government project
to try and encourage children aged 5-11 to eat more fruit
and vegetables: all the foods were free.

Healthy eating means having a balanced diet. If you want a
healthy diet you should have a little bit of everything, because
if you have too much of anything it isn't good for you.
You should have about as
much fruit and veg as you can fit in your hand. If you have
a bit more than a handful it doesn't do you any harm: tinned
fruit is good too.
Any fruit is good except
if it has any sugar it won't be healthy. If you eat five portions
you are 20% less likely to get heart disease or cancer. But
I still think that fresh fruit is much better for you.

Eleanor We are trying to encourage
kids to eat more fruit and veg. I'm not saying that we don't
eat fruit and veg at our school but we want to eat more fruit!
We had a 5-10 minute talk
about fruit and veg and I bet you didn't know that if you
eat fruit and veg now, you're' 20% less likely to have cancer
and heart disease.
After that we went to the
hall for free food. The menu included muesli bars, current
buns, fruitcake, peach puffs, peach pastries and loads more!
So thanks to Ruth, Alison
and Helen for doing it: and none of this would be possible
without Kirsty Wiggins for organising all this. So remember
Grab5!

We were all excited when Miss Ekins our Headteacher announced
that Grab5! were about to come into our class. When they came
in we were all amazed that Ruth was in a carrot costume and
Alison and Helen in pea costumes.
After they had given us a
talk about healthy eating we went in the hall and suddenly
saw loads of food which included muesli bars, current buns,
rich fruit, peach puffs and strawberry yoghurt cake, French
melon toast, fruit kebabs, a selection of fresh and dried
fruits, strawberry shakes and mixed fruit.
Then our cook Sonia gave
us a smoothie each which were delicious. On a different table
Grab 5! had provided us leaflets and posters and had put posters
up on the walls. It was amazing. Thank you Miss Ekins for
providing this wonderful land of fruit and Sonia the cook.
