Five Simple colours
Red, orange, white, green and blue
If you don't catch my drift
Then I envy you.
Just colours on a cloth
Lines on a flag
That cause smiles tears and jeers
As it has been for years.
Best just to sing along
It don't pay to make a sound
The mob dictates what's right and wrong
They don't need your sort around.
Tradition sanctions hate
Not a country but a state
A state, a mess, I must confess
The state We're in has me depressed.
We must be so much fun to study
On paper what's clear, put in practice is muddy.
As we live by a code both strict and informal
The state we are in is sick and abnormal.
What I don't understand is that although we need change
No one can challenge the minority rage.
Democratic in parts, in theory at least
But the mob shouts much louder and we all fear the beast.
The Beast up the road is better left sleeping
For once it is woken families are left grieving
For a loss that for some is just one more number
To add to the pile of the weight we are under.
It's easy to motivate the ones who block roads
As the passive majority stay at home and implode.
All that is left is the flicker of hope
Although it is feint, it still helps us to cope.
Accepting we can't have it all our own way
And that peace shall arrive, it was due yesterday
But things have been worse, so we'll have to make do
This state of affairs bruised, battered and blue.
