Artist profile
I grew up in Bulwell, Nottingham and attended Cantrell Primary School
where I discovered my passion for drawing and painting.
I had a bit of a rivalry with my friend Robert
from an early age; we'd have big arguments about who was better
at drawing, and now if I'm honest he was much more gifted than me!
After primary school I started at Holgate Comprehensive
in Hucknall where I had a few 'wilderness years' concerning the
art - to be honest, I was losing interest in it.
I think it may have been because the teachers weren't
particularly inspiring; we had a CDT (craft, design & technology)
teacher for a year - that was more interested in his own paperwork.
I very nearly packed it all in when it came to
my options at the end of the third year (year 9) but my mum and
dad encouraged me to keep it up.
My teacher at GCSE and A level changed everything. Mrs Owen was
not only a brilliant teacher for me but also an excellent artist.
She really inspired me and changed a lot
about my style, totally for the better. Among other things she told
me not to use black when mixing colours and to paint as big as possible!
After A-Levels I moved to Northampton to do a combined honours degree
in Art, Media and Popular Culture. There my work looked into film
imagery and how it affects our lives...
Recently, I've been experimenting with colour - blending them into
each other, trying to create something reminiscent of the everyday
and at the same time producing something pleasing for myself and
the viewer.
As Mark Rothko said: "A Painting is not about experience -
a painting is an experience." And that kind of sums it all
up...
