July 2001 Cornering in on success
Clubs like The Bomb and Media attract followers from beyond Nottinghamshire. Now the city's reputation has been enhanced by the opening of the Works. What makes this night club more attractive is its location in Nottingham's newest entertainment centre - the Cornerhouse.
Located on the site of the Nottingham Evening Post's former headquarters, the Cornerhouse has become a one-stop shop for people of all ages keen to get out. The Warner Village cinema was one of the first entertainment areas to open in the complex in March 2001. It offers movie fans the chance to visit a city centre cinema. Following the demise of the Odeon the only major cinemas in Nottingham were out of the centre - the Savoy and Showcase. There's also the Cinema Store where film fanatics can buy movie memorabilia and soundtracks.
Nottingham has a population of 283,800 and a vibrant student population of 90,000. With a catchment of more than two million, it's clear to see why leisure entrepreneurs are keen to invest in the city. Outside London, are ranked second only to Glasgow.
Now its restaurants are gaining just as impressive a reputation with some exclusive UK food outlets choosing the city ahead of London. Santa Fe offers South-western American cuisine - the only restaurant in Britain to do so. It's also located at the Cornerhouse on Forman Street and is one of a number of eating establishments to recently open in the city.
Add to that TGI Fridays, Nandos, Wagamamas, Ma Potter's and the Parisa Café and it's clear how great a pull Nottingham now has. Just in case you feel you've eaten too much, you can work that body at Virgin Active gym. Cornerhouse Centre Manager, Suzanne Green, says "Leading national, and in some cases international brands, are investing huge amounts of money to ensure Nottingham and the East Midlands is on the map as a prime city for entertainment and leisure." The Forman Street site has been transformed into a pedestrianised area, including street cafés, giving it a continental feel. Its proximity to the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall means it's become the entertainment hub of Nottingham.
What's more, the development has created more than 100 jobs with the prospect of more to come as the Cornerhouse continues to expand. "We expect the venue to boost the local and national profile of the city and attract further income. It will certainly contribute to the thriving regional centre that Nottingham has become." So is Nottingham becoming just as good an entertainment location as London? Let's put it more simply than that. Is Nottingham the best? Let us know. |
