³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Proms 2010: Bring on Broadway, and other starry shows

Jamie Cullum

Two separate events bring the magic of Broadway to the Proms with concerts devoted to the music of Stephen Sondheim and the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim is marked by leading figures of opera and theatre, including Bryn Terfel, Maria Friedman and Simon Russell Beale, who join the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Concert Orchestra for excerpts from Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Into The Woods, Company, Pacific Overtures and Sunday In The Park With George.

Sondheim himself will talk in a Proms Intro at the Royal College of Music and the concert is broadcast on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two (31 July).

It is the 50th anniversary of the death of lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, regarded by many as "America's poet laureate".

He is remembered with Richard Rodgers's music from Carousel, The King And I, Oklahoma!, The Sound Of Music and South Pacific, performed by the team who caused such a sensation with the MGM Prom last year, John Wilson and his hand-picked orchestra (22 August). ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two broadcasts the show the following Saturday (28 August).

Singer, songwriter, musician, Radio 2 presenter, jazz leader and pop collaborator Jamie Cullum makes his Proms debut (26 August), as do the hugely original Penguin Cafe, who team up with folk artist Kathryn Tickell for their blend of catchy material and slightly surreal unpredictability which has long been familiar even to listeners who may never have heard their name (8 September).
