‘Hours and days were ticking by. I felt captive in this hospital room’

Warning: Some viewers may find the content of this video distressing.

Andrea Prudente was on holiday in Malta when she experienced complications in her pregnancy. She was unable to have medical treatment because of the country’s strict abortion laws, despite her life being at risk. Even if the foetus won’t survive, terminating a pregnancy is illegal in Malta.

Doctors told Andrea that the placenta was partly detached and her pregnancy was no longer viable but there was still a beating heart. She ended up travelling to Mallorca to get treatment, and is now recovering in a hotel.

She joined Emma Barnett on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to reflect on what happened. Woman’s Hour contacted the last hospital that Andrea went to in Malta but haven't had a response.
