Outbidding feckless brother Isaac at auction, Elspeth returns to Halecot where she grew up helping father Eli on the farm. As a practically-minded and independent widow she receives hostility from the local community, who are resistant to women working the land.
Halecot Farm quickly becomes a welcoming refuge as Elspeth, unable to rely solely on her daughter Effie, has to harness all the help she can get. Local land disputes soon become the least of Elspeth’s worries after she takes on a secretive and a mysterious Belgian called Georges.
