Jobs for February

It might still be winter and February can have some really cold days but it is also a month full of hope. Every day we get a little more daylight and in the garden and we see signs of new life. Snowdrops are my highlight - they have a simple understated beauty and with their little white nodding heads they signal that better days lie ahead.

February is a good time to move Snowdrops
  • Prepare vegetables and warm the ground using black plastic sheets
  • Buy Snowdrops 'in the green' or lift and divide up your own clumps
  • Keep topping up bird feeders and make sure there is water available
  • Prune Wisteria side shoots to 2 or 3 buds
Time to winter prune Wisteria
  • chit potato tubers to get them ready for planting
  • top dress pots with some fresh compost
  • slug control - rumour has it slugs get busy on Valentine's day - so time to tackle them.
