Features of rock music
Rock music is usually in 4/4 time and most songs use a verse-chorus structure. It is usually performed by bands that include the electric guitar, bass guitar and drums, and with at least one singer. Lyrics in rock music can be based on many topics, but will often include subjects such as love, society and politics.
Rock music typically includes the following features:
- guitar riff 鈥 a short repeated phrase that forms the basis of a song
- distortion 鈥 distortion happens when an amplified sound is changed to create a fuzzy or growling tone on a guitar
- amplification 鈥 amplified sound is when music is made louder, usually by using electronic equipment
- power chords 鈥 a powerful two-note chord that usually includes the tonic and dominant of the key, eg C and G in the key of C
