Candelas
Candelas is the name of a rock band from Llanuwchllyn in north Wales.
The band was established in 2009 and includes five musicians:
- Osian Williams 鈥 guitar and vocals
- Ifan Jones 鈥 guitar
- Tomos Edwards 鈥 bass guitar
- Gruffydd Edwards 鈥 guitar
- Lewis Williams 鈥 drums
They released their first EP - Kim y Syniad - in 2011, and their first album - Candelas - in 2013. The first album included songs sung in both English and Welsh, and their second album - Bodoli鈥檔 Ddistaw - was sung entirely in Welsh.
The song Rhedeg i Paris became an anthem to celebrate Wales鈥 campaign in the 2016 UEFA European Championship, and gained almost 150,000 views on the video sharing platform, YouTube.
The band鈥檚 main influences are the American bands The Strokes and Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Arctic Monkeys from England.
The band Candelas has won several awards, including several Y Selar awards for best band and best Welsh language song. The album Bodoli鈥檔 Ddistaw was also shortlisted for the 2015 Welsh-language album of the year. The band performs at numerous music festivals across Wales such as at Maes B at the National EisteddfodA celebration of Welsh poetry and music in the form of a festival with competitions for, eg singing, dancing, reciting and writing poetry, and composing music and prose. It is held alternately every year in north and south Wales. and Tafwyl in Cardiff.
