Charlie Higson
The road Charlie Higson took to success is fairly unusual. Fortunately he had company, starting out as a decorator with housemate Paul Whitehouse.
Whitehouse and Higson lived on the same estate as aspiring comic Harry Enfield, and they whiled away many an evening in the pub. When the Enfields's stand-up character Stavros was booked for Saturday Night Live, he invited them to write for him.
They wrote for Enfield's own show, and for Vic Reeves Big Night Out>. A show-reel of clips from the former, inspired the direction would take: Get in, deliver the line, and get out. The result was one of the best sketch shows around.
Higson went on to develop and produce a version of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) for today's audiences. An inventive, supernatural thriller starring Reeves and Mortimer, the show has run for two series.
Charlie Higson is also a successful novelist.
