Living in Rathcoole

We moved into our brand new house on the 2nd April 1963. This area of Rathcoole was newly developed with lots of people moving into houses, all with the same upheaval, and looking for the facilities, schools, doctors, transport and what to do with gardens filled with cement and rubble.

This made us a small community, meeting our new neighbours and all the children settling down and making new friends. This is when I met my very special friend Willina Parkinson. She lived just two doors away and it would take me too long to tell you our entire story. All I would say is that ‘chalk and cheese’ describes us still now. Willina, a country girl from Killyleagh and me a wee townie from Belfast, formed a loving and true friendship which is still going strong after forty-five years.

All those years ago Rathcoole felt like living in the country. I have seen many changes; multi-storey flats, the Abbey Centre and the Valley Leisure Centre, with the M2, 3 and 5 taking us in all directions. Rathcoole is a beautifully situated estate, over looked by a place that holds happy memories for me – The Cave Hill.
