The first ever DH Lawrence Festival in Eastwood has begun.

The two-month long festival will run from Tuesday, 6th July to Tuesday, 31st August 2004.

The festival will take place in Eastwood, Nottingham the birthplace of the writer, artist and poet.

The event concentrates on four key themes from his life and works and these are:
  • The literary landscapes from which Lawrence was so inspired
  • D. H. Lawrence as the stage and screen icon
  • D. H. Lawrence - The artist
  • D.H. Lawrence - The literary genius.

D H Lawrence
1885 - David Herbert Lawrence is born at Eastwood in Nottinghamshire.
1901 - Wins scholarship to Nottingham High School.
1906 - Saves the 拢20 fee to enable him to take up a teacher training scholarship at Nottingham University.
1908 - He became an assistant master at Davidson Road Elementary School in Croydon
1910 - After the death of his mother, he became ill and was advised to give up teaching.
1911 - his novel The White Peacock was published.
1912 - The Trespasser.
1912 - Lawrence meets Frieda Weekley, nee von Richthofen, the wife of a professor who had taught him.
1913 - Publication of Sons And Lovers.
1914 - Lawrence and Frieda elope together and got married.
1919 - Moves to Italy.
1922 - Travels to Ceylon, Australia, USA and Mexico.
1928 - Private publication of his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover in Italy. It was not to be commercially published in the USA or Britain for 30 years.
1929 - An exhibition of his art work is held in London.
1930 - Lawrence died in a sanatorium in Vence, France on March 2nd.
