5 TV spin-offs we'd love to see as much as Kat and Alfie's 'Redwater'
Jessie Wallace: "It feels weird doing something completely different from EastEnders, but still playing the same character."
Kat & Alfie Moon - aka Jessie Wallace & Shane Richie chat about their EastEnders spin-off
Spin-offs are few and far between when it comes to our favourite shows but that might all be about to change thanks to Kat and Alfie Moon’s new mini-series, . Upping sticks from London to Ireland, the cockney couple (played by Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie) star in the six-part drama chronicling the ups and down of their time in a seaside town, the fictional Redwater. Twists and turns guaranteed, obviously.
Aside from adding a welcome addition to our TV viewing, the Moon's move to Ireland got us thinking about the other spin-offs we'd love to see. From Peter Kay's Car Share to Gavin & Stacey, here are the characters and storylines we'd love to see take centre stage in their own (surely brilliant) shows.
The Office: Tim and Dawn
Tim and Dawn
Tim and Dawn, who have stifled their feelings for so long, finally kiss at the office party.
We have a lot to thank Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant for when it comes to (David Brent's dancing, anyone?) but the awkward at worst, heart-warming at best romance between Tim and Dawn deserves a special mention.
Played by Martin Freeman and Lucy Davis, the couple's will-they-won't-they romance only comes to fruition during the climactic Christmas Special when they finally kiss. For that reason alone, we need to know what happens next. Spin-off stat, please.
My Family: Nick Harper
Nick Harper's Tree Amigos
Ben finds his house has been taken over with Nick's latest business plan.
We came for the relatable family mishaps and stayed for Nick Harper's hare-brained schemes. While Ben (played by Robert Lindsay), Susan (played by Zoë Wanamaker) and their kids Janey and Michael provided endless hours of entertainment on - 121 episodes worth, to be precise - it was the goofy and kooky Nick we'd love to see star in his own spin-off.
Peter Kay's Car Share: John's Nan
Nana
John picks up a couple of unexpected passengers at Kayleigh's house.
John (played by Peter Kay) and Kayleigh (played by Sian Gibson) are constantly nattering in their hit show - on the phone, in the car, at the office party - but John's Nan manages to steal scenes without saying a word. You know what that is? Spin-off making material.
While we're not entirely sure on the setting, we do know that a cameo appearance from John and Kayleigh would be very well received (by us). Make it happen please,
Line of Duty: Roz Huntley
'What really happened that night, Roz?'
Roz returns home to questions from her husband Nick.
Thandie Newton stole the show in the fourth series of Line Of Duty as ice-cold Detective Chief Inspector Roz Huntley. Like Keeley Hawes before her in series two, Thandie's character was as compelling and watchable as any of the members of AC12 (Anti-Corruption Unit 12). Along with her team of detectives - the astute Neil, teacher's pet Jodie - a prequel series about her squad would make gripping and compelling television.
And, with only two more series of Line Of Duty confirmed, fans are sure to want to see more from the standout characters from this award-winning show.
Gavin & Stacey: Smithy and Nessa
From Billericay to Barry and everywhere inbetween, covered a lot of ground since its premiere a mind-blowing 10 years ago (seriously, where did that time go?) but we've still got a lot of questions that need answering. Namely, what happened between Uncle Bryn and Jason on that fishing trip? But, more pressingly, what happened with Smithy and Nessa?!
The finale saw Smithy declare his love for Nessa on her wedding day to Dave and the pair finally acknowledge that they were probably (definitely) made for one another. But where are they now? A spin-off would be, in the words of Nessa, cracking.
