Background
Gareth “Gaz” Coombes is best known as the frontman of now-disbanded, cult-favourite alt-rock group, (previously shortlisted in 1995). These days confidently pursuing a solo career, Coombes’ well-regarded songwriting style continues to shine.
On his second solo album, Matador, Coombes demonstrates a masterly grasp on building irresistible hooks. The tracks are kinetic and considered, built on layers of keyboard, distorted guitar and drum beats that sound almost robotic in their relentlessness. Unmistakably anchoring all of this is Coombes’ distinctive voice, which guides the listener through a seemingly very raw emotional landscape. The album marks a clear and impressive moment of maturity in his music.
Previously shortlisted?
No, but did appear on 1995 shortlisted album I Should Coco by Supergrass.
What the critics say
"The jaunty, energetic hints of Britpop cast aside, this is Gaz Coombes the adult man, writing adult songs, and they’re really rather great." - DIY Magazine
"By the end, it feels like a journey through one man’s rawest and real emotions." - Mojo
