Background
Tunbridge Wells duo Slaves could easily be mistaken for a bigger band, given their ability to make a racket. With just a guitar and a drum kit, their grungy, garage-punk sound is unfussy and cocksure.
The band’s major-label debut album, Are you Satisfied?, is a breakneck ride complete with direct lyrics, infectious hooks and an ever-charming brashness. Main singer Isaac Holman's shouty delivery is as relentless as his simultaneous drumming. Along with guitarist Laurie Vincent's gritty, chugging riffs, the overall effect is helplessly and chaotically charismatic. In fact the record as a whole comes across with a raw, stomping vitality that ultimately feels well-measured and thoughtful.
